I thought I would report back. I unlocked the dongle (18mins 52secs) and uninstalled the three connection manager. I then added it as a new dial up connection in the network connections in XP pointing it to the ZTE modem (dongle was still attached to my laptop), and gave the required username/password. Dialling *99***1# and leaving all other options as default, I proceeded to dial and the internet connected fine. A couple of pages were refreshed (after disconnecting from my wireless network) and worked fine, although a little slower than my home broadband.
I hope this info is of use. I just don't like installing 3rd party connection managers when XP does it fine. Ok, it doesn't check for signal quality etc... but you might as well just try if you want the net anyway eh? I unlocked my dongle to use an iPhone sim in which I haven't activated yet so haven't tried whether this works with the iPhone connection settings, but I suspect it does!
p.s I didn't enter in an IP address (this is found automatically) and the APN is also found automatically on connection.Telephone number to dial: *99***1#

anyone give me a rough idea of speeds i could expect using unlocked dongle on o2 3g network(iphone sim) compared to three 3g network(included sim) - i understand variability due to contention ratios etc so just looking for estimate - cheers0

The maximum the device supports, which I believe is 3.6Mbit.0
