Another question presumably I could just top up this PAYG SIM with a bankers card at a cash machine for £10 to get the 100 min (never topped up before) without having to mess about.

The second person I spoke to confirmed the original details and the website.

    Hi Froggitt,

    Apologies for the confusion here.

Just thought I'd confirm that the second person who you spoke to was correct as is our website.

I am going on a cruise to the Canaries (Spain), Portugal and Morocco next week. The ship is equipped with an advanced roaming network (according to the brochure) does this mean

    a) The Vodaphone SIM will allow me the local call rates, in other words will this be classed as Europe)

    b) If not will the signal overide any nearby land based mast if when near a port, that would otherwise charge me local rates, and fleece me?

    Hi cepheus,

This is a great question and although I'm not entirely sure at the moment of the right answer and take a closer look at this and come back to you tomorrow.

    Thanks,

Make sure you're on a Vodafone network

To get the special Passport rates you need to make sure you're on a Vodafone or Vodafone partner network.

This is incorrect as pointed out by Vodafone company representative on another thread:
    Hi Guys

I really want to clarify this for you once and for all.

    ...

You no longer have to be on the prefered network to take part. The netowrk you use when you roam no longer matters. If you are roaming close to the boarder of a country there may be a possiblity you can pick up another countries network. If this is the case and that network belongs to a non Passport country then you will be charged.

According to a Vodaphone representative it is inclusive of cruise providing I lock onto a partner network. Not sure how it does this a long way out at sea, I assumed it would be some satillite system, hope she understood this.

I hope so or else my £10 will be gone very quickly! Really too late now, as I am leaving in a hour! For the SIM I am customer no 70050 Cust Ref VC0012911793, I will place my phone no on your PM.

    Hi cepheus,

Okay, after a bit of digging I came across this thread, which also happens to be on here, which should answer your queries.

And for more information on our roaming charges just click here.

All the best and enjoy the cruise!

Just come back from cruise.....make sure you select the network on hte phone manually so as not to get the cruiseline cell.....eg we were cruising the Norweigan fjords, and half an hour out of port, we still had land on both sides, and were able to connect to Telenor, who had kindly sent a txt when we arrived reminding us that roaming is now free.

Great promotion Vodafone.......usually you get nothing from me when Im abroad, but at least this way you got a few quid from me calling home from my balcony!!!

I had problems using the Maritime roaming during the first few days and the ships reception seemed to think my cruise line (Fred Olsen) had no agreement with Vodaphone to use it. However, I did seem to get it working later. For me, communication is necessary at specific times so I cannot wait for a land connection and I expect to get fried.

I seemed to be able to get Vodaphone Spain from Tangier, so at least that was a help. When cruising near land it helps to get to the uppermost deck before locking on to a network, sometimes reception can be obtained over several tens of miles this way. I tried to estimate the time when we would be passing various capes and islands.

Hi Please help I have had 6 different answer to this from 6 different Vodaphone people!!

My son is in Hungary until Nov - he has a Voda pay n Go, with Passport and International, also friends and family.

Now the roaming deal has finished what do calls cost him to make and what do they cost him to receieve.... does friends pack work if we call him - as its still a UK phone number?? Ive had various answers ranging from 75p connection then free for 60mins to 75p connection then 77p per min????

Can someone please help as the promo finished today and he is scared to call anyone and I dont want to ring him incase he gets charged silly rates. I have found a provider over here with lower rates to call him on mobile and landline - but what does it cost him thats where the answers keep changing -

Also - what will texts cost him to send and receieve

    Thanks

Depending on the answers you receive, you may find it cheaper for him to use a Hungarian PAYG SIM for his mobile, and use a cheap call provider to call him from here....Im sure there is an article on this site eg 2p per minute.

I subscribed to Passport shortly after getting a new contract phone.
I was going to Europe the next day, and was going to travel (Netherlands and Germany) with people from all over Europe.
I understood, as it is clearly indicated on the vodafone site, that only calls to the UK and to people in the country I was in were free.
For texts on the other hand, there was (and still isn't) anything that indicated such restrictions.
Still, I didn't assume that there were included like texts to the UK but expected to pay the new 11p cap for those texts I sent to my friends.

When I got back to the UK, I checked my usage (non-itemised) and saw an extra cost of over £8.. which although I did text a bit was nowhere near realistic.
Upon calling Vodaphone, I was told I was charged the 'home' rate of 24p (or whatever that is, it's damn hard to find on the Vodafone site!) for those texts...despite the fact the vodafone passport page only lists 11p for texts and nothing else.
Is that even legal since there's an EU cap? (I even got billed for a text in the country I was in at the time.)

and it certainly should have been made clear.. I would have used my O2 or Orange PAYG sim instead if I'd known! (the way I use those for Overseas calls and texts from the UK since they're WAY cheaper)

already regretting having signed a 2 year contract (only ever had PAYG before).
