    Hey,

Was just looking at the Vodafone passport promotion and, being a fastidious law student, went through the small print. Something that I don't think has been mentioned is that receiving calls is free, but only for an hour.

"For each call received that lasts longer than 60 minutes, a 20p (inc VAT) per minute charge applies from the 60th minute onwards."

So, for anyone receiving lengthy calls, just hang up at 59 minutes. Of course, the caller can just call back straight away, the above only seems to apply to each individual call.

    Happy roaming.

All Vodafone Passport partner networks can be found by using the wizard on this page:
    http://www.abroad.vodafone.co.uk/index.cfm

Don't forget to tick the 'I also have: Vodafone Passport' box.

I'm setting this up for my lovely g/f, who is going to Rome on Thursday. Have the SIM in an unlocked phone and have signed up for passport. Plan to buy a Freedom pack - looks like the best deal by far for her use.

Using the link above to see the partner network(s) - and entering "Pay as you go" and ticking "Passport" box the first one that comes up is Vodafone Italy. But it also lists TIM and WIND.

Does anyone know if it is fine to choose any one of these three - or must she choose Vodafone Italy?

    Thanks,
    Hobbin.

All three are fine for the summer roaming promotion. I would suggest that her phone is set to automatic network selection as that will ensure that it uses the strongest signal.

When you check the networks in italy on the Vodafone website it shows all 3 as partner networks so no need to worry.

I have double checked this with Vodafone and the freedom packs are eligable for the free summer roaming promotion. The only thigs that are not are Stop the Clock, Free Weekends and Text Unlimited.

Does anyone know if this will work if the SIM is only loaded with a freedom pack and no additional "normal" credit? I've got £10 loaded and not sure whether to convert it all to a freedom pack......

    Quote from Vodafone FAQ, re
Can I use my Vodafone pay as you go Freedom Pack minutes abroad?

"Yes, but you can only use your Vodafone Freedom Pack minutes with Vodafone Passport - after the first three minutes then the rest of your call can come from your Vodafone Freedom Pack minutes (up to the usual Vodafone Passport limits)."

Can anyone explain exactly what this means?

You will not need any other credit if you have a freedom pack. You do need to ensure you have Vodafone Passport added. I would suggest you text "Passport" to 2345 just to make sure as this will add Vodafone Passport. The only time you would need other credit apart from your freedom pack is if you want to call numbers beggining with 08 or 09 as these are cannot be used with freedom packs, or if you want to browse internet. I would not suggest using the internet though as this is not included in the free summer roaming promotion.
  • Just joined Vodaphone from T Mobile. I'm going away for three weeks in July and three weeks in August to spain, so I've got, (or thought I'd got) the Passport deal. The guy said, I don't have to do anything, and will automatically be included.

On receiving my phone, I rang them to check a few things with them.

They informed me that although I had been told when taking out the new contract that I was included in the Passport, and that when the paperwork came, it clearly states passport on this. That as a new customer, and not knowing anything about my credit history, I would have to pay them £150 BEFORE I could use this service, which they would then give me back in three months time! Otherwise, I will not be able to use my phone/mins for practically all of July and August.

Just for the record, I am a housewife, so don't work, but have no debts and only a debit card and we don't have anything on credit.

The worrying thing about this is that if I had gone abroad without checking this, I would have ended up with a massive bill. This morning, I have received the paperwork for the contract. It clearly states I am receiving the Passport as part of my contract. On the website, it says for Contract customers text passport to 97888.

I await with interest their reply!

There seems to be some confusion with your post. The £150 deposit that they have asked for is for the ability to use your phone for international calls, roaming (Using your phone abroad) and premium rate numbers. This does not mean that you cannot have passport, it just means without paying the deposit your phone will not work abroad at all. That said there is no way you would have managed to get a large bill.

Maybe this could have been explained better to you when taking out the agreement, but it is standard for Vodafone to put the bar on international and premium rate use on all of their new contracts. The only way around this is to pay the £150 deposit as without doing so the bar will not be lifted.

Following on from the last post, this is something which has been overlooked in this thread so far.

In order for your phone to work abroad you must have International, Premium rate and roaming bars lifted. As standard this is on all new agreements as it prevents people from taking out agreements to run up large bills that they never intend on paying. The majority of people who dont intend to abuse the service are the ones that suffer as they are required to pay a deposit to have the bar lifted or wait till the 3rd bill has been paid before the bar will be lifted.

On pay as you go the bar is not there as customers cannot make calls without having any credit, so there is no risk to the network.

It is possible to have Vodafone Passport even if the handset has a premium rate, international and roaming bar on the account.
