As recommended by Martin on his Top Student Accounts 2008/9 page, my niece signed up for the Halifax account.
She was told today she had been rejected. She was also told that to find out why she'd have to pay £3. Does this sound correct?
I think it's £2 (unless it's gone up)
there's more information on this site on how to obtain your credit reports for free.
I've forgotten what the companies names are.. I think there are 3 in total but 2 main one.
Halifax are the hardest student account to get so I wouldn't get too upset!! (you can still check the credit reports anyway to see if there are any errors etc)
www.Experian.co.uk
is one of them.
try looking up more info on this site.. I'll see if I can find it and post it.
found it... it also gives info on how to find out free.

Hi, I'm a British citizen, but I've been abroad the UK for a couple of years, and now im back to the UK. Im going to be an undergraduate and i need a student loan, therefore since I haven't been here for the three years before the start of my first academic year. Is there any possibility that I wouldn't get the student loan and would be rejected? Thanks0

Hi there hope someone can help - I've had a quick browse through the thread but don't have time at the moment to trawl through 35 pages!
Basically I received my annual statement from SLC today and the credit applied to my account is totally wrong. It shows that for the tax year 07/08, HMRC have paid them £205.18. However I pay around £70/m in student loans and have been doing so for 2 years or so. My payslips show that for the tax year 07/08 I have paid £614.00 in total. Unfortunately there is no box on the P60 to show student loan contributions, and I only have the word of my employer (via my payslips) to prove what has been deducted from me.
My question is - who is responsible for sorting this out? The interest for this year is now a lot more than it should be because according to them, my balance is £400 or so more than it actually should be. I don't want to be penalised in terms of extra interest because someone has messed up.
I'm envisaging being shunted around departments of both SLC and HMRC, with everyone telling me its someone else's responsibilty. Can anyone give me some ammunition?
I had similar problems with some missing payments. Give SLC a ring and explain, they have to raise a query with HMRC and will ask you to send your payslips/P60 (I'm sure mine did show the student loan payments in that employment). It took a while but I did eventually get the missing money recredited and interest adjusted.0 -

I think you might have problems if you haven't been resident in the UK for the last 3 years, depending where you've been and why. Your LEA should be able to give you more information.0 -
I applied for my loan etc on 10th May 08 and still have not heard anything. When I log in online it says it is awaiting further information. My partner has provided all of his information online not long after I applied so it shouldn't be waiting for anything! Should I have heard by now? I am starting my final yr in a few weeks time and really need to money paid ontime! I hate using the phone so figured I would ask here before braving the telephone system!!
thanks!0 -

ring your local Local Authority quick!
just make sure they do have everything - even if they've lost something you can at least hand it in asap rather than wait any longer.
don't sit and wait - it's better to find out now!
I hate using the phone but I've rang several times.. this was two months after sending it all in (the 1st day you were allowed) and I've had confirmation and my payment schedule!
(don't mean to make you panic! but you might find out that all is ok and they haven't updated your online account.. fingers crossed)

Argh what do you do when SLD and the LA keep blaming each other?! First my log in said "awaiting processing" so I rang SLD, all fine their end, they'll check and to ring again. So I rang a couple of days later, was an error LA-end, now sorted. Since then both my parents have recieved emails saying "awaiting further information".
Now who do I chase?
So annoying as I'm going into my 2nd year so why do they need to see info again?!No longer using this account for new posts from 20130 -

Just managed to get through to student finance. The girl I spoke to said everything is completed they are just waiting for confirmation from my uni that I have re-enrolled (which I only did yesterday due to having outstanding tuition fees from last year). She was able to give me my amounts etc and it should all go through without a hitch now (fingers crossed) Phew!!!0
