  • The threshold for making payments went up from £10,000 to £15,000 in April 2005. Do you think that this might explain your situation?
Yes it seems to fit the dates that it stopped. Although i've earned over 15k for the last 5 years. I'm on 23k now, so am well over the threshold. Does the mistake fall with HMRC? Are they not supposed to issue stop and start notifications to the employer?

Also, if I start paying again now, will I have to clear all those arrears or will I just carry on paying as usual but for a longer period? I can't find anything on the internet about people in the same situation as me!

Sorry, I can't answer all of these questions; I don't work for the SLC. I think you're supposed to tell your employer that you have a loan to pay back. I'd contact the SLC asap to discuss repaying the arrears.

    Where do I start....

In 2005 I started a degree in uni, I did not complete year one and was allowed to redo year 1 in 2006. I stopped attending almost immediately after starting but did not inform student finance. I did not have to pay tuition fee's for 2006 as the uni wrote to slc and told them that i enrolled but never attended so fee's did not have to be paid.
I have now been excepted into uni again on a different course, but as I recieved grants before the slc want me to pay them back and have awarded me the loan but no grants.
I am due to get just over 1k every 3 months and im getting my tuition fee's paid also. Thing is I have 3 children and I am a single parent and this is not enough to live on and i have also been told that i wont get the childcare grant. What can i do?

ok....before you all start saying well you attended uni and applied for grants but didn't attend yes I did, but i was also in a domestic violent relationship and had to flee my home and move 180 miles away because of it, I have told slc that I have no objection to paying back money if that is what i owe, but do I have to lose all my grants....can i not pay it back over a period of time?? the local lea said no and really dont seem to care and the slc are telling me that they only do what the LEA are telling them to do.

I know this is all my own fault but I really would like to move on with my life and get back to HE and get a good job....support my children and be happy, I dont know what else to do and I dont know who else to ask....which is why im here asking you guys.

    Thanks in advance.

loans etc are for undergraduates only!
so having a previous degree does mean you won't get the usual fees/loans!
I think phd students get some funding... but I really don't know much about that.

I am an undergraduate - as far as this course is concerned. Yes I have a previous degree, from 20 years ago, but I'm currently completeing a second degree so that I can do my PGCE in 2009/10. My first degree was in Fine Art - very enjoyable, but doesn't qualify you to do much!

I have self funded my first two years on the research degree I am currently completing, but could really do with a student loan to help family finances in year 3. As I wasn't funded first time round I seems unfair that I can't get any government help this time either.

i Will be a 2nd year continuing Mature student this year, and only study part time, as it was to much hassle to sort out all the benefits etc.

I'm a single parent and last year got my fees paid plus the £250 Grant towards course materials. I then discovered by luck that i could apply for the Acess to Learning Fund and was chuffed to get £700+. Although this sounds like a lot, it was soon gone once paid childcare costs, as part time students don't qualify for them.

My question is would I be entitled to Special Support Grant or would it cancel out any other help I already get??? I don't want to seem greedy but it's hard to cope on what we get, and anything extra just makes it that little easier.

    Thanks in advance for advice

Hi there hope someone can help - I've had a quick browse through the thread but don't have time at the moment to trawl through 35 pages!

Basically I received my annual statement from SLC today and the credit applied to my account is totally wrong. It shows that for the tax year 07/08, HMRC have paid them £205.18. However I pay around £70/m in student loans and have been doing so for 2 years or so. My payslips show that for the tax year 07/08 I have paid £614.00 in total. Unfortunately there is no box on the P60 to show student loan contributions, and I only have the word of my employer (via my payslips) to prove what has been deducted from me.

My question is - who is responsible for sorting this out? The interest for this year is now a lot more than it should be because according to them, my balance is £400 or so more than it actually should be. I don't want to be penalised in terms of extra interest because someone has messed up.

I'm envisaging being shunted around departments of both SLC and HMRC, with everyone telling me its someone else's responsibilty. Can anyone give me some ammunition?

Don't worry to much if not heard just yet it takes a while. Once he's been there for couple of weeks the College/Uni will have to sign a form and then h'll send it back to them. The ART ID is your unique no from your LEA, you'll also get a secret word and password. Hope this helps.

Thanks dszen, so he might not get the loans through before he starts? I was hoping he'd hear before he went cos he's a bit useless with money and I was going to help him set a budget before he went. Also, I think they have to pay a £200 deposit on the flat, will the deposit come out of the loans? We haven't even recieved our p60's back yet. god this is such a stressful time, all advice appreciated thanks
