  • Student loans aren't available for postgraduate courses anywhere in the UK. I don't know why you think that you should be the exception.

I don't think I should be the exception. I was just unaware that student loans were unavailable for postgraduates.

Should SAAS pay for my tuition fees like my advisor said? Am I doing the right thing? Could someone please help. Thanks.
  • I have provided Wakefield Council with proof of my husbands earning 3 times because TWICE they have LOST this information. First they lost a copy of his P60 and secondly they lost a letter from his employer confirming his salary. As yet I do not know if they have lost the third letter which was given to them again this week. Therefore my daughter is not receiving her full entitlement before she gets to University this month as she needs to be 'reassessed'. Does anyone know if there is anything I can do under Data Protection about the loss of this information because I dont think they should be allowed to get away with it??

When you say your "advisor" who do you actually mean? You seem to have misunderstood what you've been told and assumed that a loan would be available when it sounds to me as if they were talking about the fourth year of an undergraduate degree.

I don't know what other help you want; nobody can change the facts of the matter which is that postgrad degrees aren't eligible for student loans. SAAS have told you the same thing. I'm sorry to be awkward but that's the truth.

SAAS would pay for your final year of undergraduate study, but will not pay for postgraduate study unless it is one of their exceptions like teaching. Postgraduates have very few options with regards to funding, a career development loan is what most people take.

ONW, I think the poster means their advisor of studies, they are a bit like a personal tutor.
  • Does anyone know if you can apply for a student loan after already receiving your award/support notice? I am asking on behalf of a friend who has already tried calling SAAS (no answer, or always engaged) and has e-mailed them too, again no answer as of yet.

I can't think of a reason why he shouldn't be able to get one, but does anyone know for sure?

  • Hi

I wanted to pick anyones brains about student exchange programs. I am hoping to take part in a Student exchange program next year and move to Australia for a year. My University doesn't offer any information about Student Funding while your away. Does anybody where I stand with Student Loans and Grants and if there is any additional support available from anywhere. Thanks.

I know that in Scotland you get the same support as you would if you lived in halls/private renting. I don't know about additional support though.
  • While doing teacher training the uni I was at stated that we were eligible to have our student loans repayed if we stay in teaching for 10 years. They said that we were automatically enetered for the scheme. I have recently found out this is not true and I should have had an application pack.

Is there anything I can do? I'm furious!

    Thanks
  • I'm a teacher, who has recently gone from having a full time permanent job over the £15,000 threshold, where I was paying my student loan back through PAYE; to being a supply teacher, only working at the moment on average 2 in 5 days a week.

I have 2 questions that I wonder if anyone can help me with.

    1) Do I have to inform the SLC of my change of job? Or will my new employers (the council) do it for me?

2)I'm on a reasonable grade on the pay scale but am worried as my monthly income will vary due to the amount of work that I get each month, will I have to pay the 9% for the salary that I could get (if I amazingly managed to get work for every day of the year) or is it proportional to what I have earnt that month?

Potentially if I don't get many calls, I could earn less than the £15,000 threshold.

Hope that makes sense. If someone could help to make me less confused, I'd be very grateful!
