I previously went to Uni before and took a student loan. However, the course wasn't for me and i dropped out two years into the course and worked.

Now i've started Uni again with a different course that i like. I've paid the fee's for the first year, but was wondering if i could again get a loan or maintenance grant to help deal with fee's that i am likely to incur in this second year.

    but

    1) Will they give me a loan after not completing the first course - even if i didn't get funding for all three years?

    2) On the form it talks about "compelling personal reasons" or simply failing the course; what is best to put down if i don't really have any evidence other than my own personal account of the situation at the time. I'd like to know their criteria for this and how it can affect my application.

You should get funding for the second and third years, although I'd probably ask to make sure. You're entitled to four years of funding, the extra year is for a 'false start'.

Personal reasons are things like bereavement in the (immediate) family or if your circumstances change so that you are left to care for a sick relative, for example. Personal illness also counts if it was so bad so as to effect your studied so things like depression or chronic illnesses. If you tell them your circumstance then they might say that it is compelling enough. For all of those you need proof, though. You would need to show a death certificate or a doctor's letter or something else that shows your circumstances.

but is that funding for the second and third years dependent on showing compelling personal circumstances?. If i simply put down poor academic performance will that still entitle me to the 2 years funding; or will they say no?

or something they'll give to me anyway. Because although my personal reasons were significant to me, they are unlikely to be compelling to a third party.

If you can explain why your personal circumstance affected your academic performance then they might give it to you. But you should get at least one year (the last) of funding. I'm not totally sure of how it works in England and Wales.

    Can anyone help me out?

I've just applied for my second year of student finance, and now both my parents are unemployed as they have been made redundant. I have sent of the relevant letters etc prooving this for my new application, but will i be eligible for the full amount of the higher education grant? Last year i only got £130 of it.

    Just wondering.

    Thanks

I know we're advised not to pay back our student loan until we have to but with rising interest rates should we consider paying it back? Even voluntary contributions?

Next year (08-09), the loan rate will be 3.8%. This year it is 4.8%. You can get at least 7% on a fixed rate or 6.5% variable savings accounts.

    Hi,
Can anyone help me out? I'm about to go into my second year and in my first i got main grant and Parents learning allowance for max amounts(I think!)
My husband earned 17000 in 07/08 and i received a letter saying send us proof, which i did inc. proof of financial commitments like 7.5K mortgage payments per year and i recieved a letter from SLC this morning saying we owed them 871. Does anyone know why this is?
  • Hi,
I wondered of anyone can help. I want to start a course at Exeter college for four years which would qualify me as an licensed aircraft engineer.
For one reason or another i already hold a degree in an unrelated subject. I took a student loan out for that degree
I just wondered if anyone knows of any sources of funding available
because the fees are 1600 in the first year and 1300 in the second year. I dont pay fees for the final two years and get a guaranteed contract with Flybe at the end of the 4th year of 30k.
