Dear slc worker, thank god you are here, I'm so confused! Starting an msc in social work. I don't have a degree, my highest level qualification is an advanced diploma. The nice folk at the bursary company have offered 5.5k towards living and 3.5k towards the 5.5k tuition fees. Now, I have a shortfall of 2k (tuition fees) and another shortfall of about 6k minimum for living expenses. Any idea what is available to help with this? Thanks for your help. Not having a degree means I've never accessed student finance before so I am a bit naive!

I'm afraid that student loans aren't available for post graduate degrees. Most people in your situation use the funding to pay the fees and support themselves by part time work and/or savings.

Hello, ive not posted before and i wonder if someone could help me out. My daughters Student Finance is becoming a nightmare. My husband and I are separated but not divored and SF have requested a Statutory Declaration tot say that we are not living together. The solicitors costs for this are ridiculous, does anyone know if I can draft this myself and get it witnessed by a solicitor and if so does anyone know how I would word it? Thank you x

Are you getting the 25% reduction in council tax for single occupancy?

Our son graduated last summer and has started to pay his loan back through salary deductions. He receives a London weighting and lodge allowance. Both these items are subject to tax, NI and now student loan repayments. This is causing him real financial hardship, due to the cost of renting a flat down there and other high living costs (transport etc).
Is there any way that these allowances can be excluded from his liability to pay back his loan?

Could you clarify what you mean by "lodge allowance"?

I think your best course of action now would be a phone call. Confirm you've changed your course details online with them, and state it doesn't seem to be showing you as entitled. Make sure they look through everything on the phone for you, and if the person you speak to cannot confirm it, ask to be passed on to someone who can.

Sorry. It’s a payment intended to cover the cost of 4 nights accommodation from Monday to Thursday inclusive as he's working away from home. In reality he uses it towards his rent, as he lives in a shared house rather than stay in a hotel or B & B.

Sorry to appear dense:o but is he actually living away from home or do you mean away from the family home?

What I'm trying to find out is whether he normally lives at home, works from there and has been seconded to another site or whether he's moved to another town for a job and just happens to come back to the family home at weekends.

Not being nosy but the two situations would be different for tax purposes.

He is currently living and working in London (as it's too far to commute). The nature of his work (civil engineering/construction) means he can, in theory, be working on different projects anywhere in the country. His lodge allowance is paid to contribute to his living away accommodation costs. He does not own his own home, and sometimes returns to the family home at weekends.

I should probably also add that he rents a flat in London for which he uses his 'living away' allowance to help pay the rent.
