    Travel only while overseas.

If the requirement was to have an interview in order to obtain the VISA, then travel costs can be claimed, in according with Paragraph 54(c) of The Education (Student Support) Regulations 2011 and Paragraph 106 of the Grants for Dependants and Travel Grants guide that is issued to SFE assessors.

The US Department of State does confirm it is a requirement for students to attend interview for a student visa, and for that, I would believe she would be eligible for reimbursement of the train fare to London.

Used the advice above to appeal against the decision not to pay for travel to London for the interview for student visa but they still refusing to pay  It seems a stupid system whereby they will pay for the US Visa but not for you to travel there to collect it... :(
  • I'm completing my application online at the moent and am confused by the part relating to dependent children. I have a 9 year old son. I don't really understand what I am meant to include for "Income from all sources net of income tax and social security contributions" in the section relatingto my son's details. Anyhelp greatly appreciated as there is no help screen on that page

Hi, these are probably really daft questions but on the finance application I've just got to the father's income and it asks if he gets WFTC/CTC but should I put it under father or mother if I receive it?

Also, we are not sure if he is going to live on campus or not. We think he should live on campus because it would make him more independent but at the moment he is adamant that he's not going to, so would it be better to apply for grants/bursaries as living in and change it later if he decides not to, or should we apply as living at home and change it later if he doesn't live in.

Personally, since he's now (or about to become) a grown up, I'd let him decide. Either way changing it shouldn't be a problem, DS3 was living at home initially but moved out after a month.

Actually, the other thing to be aware of is that if he lives very close to Uni, he may well not get Uni accommodation immediately, even if he did want it. I'm not sure DS3 believed me when I told him that they would give priority to people living more than a mile away from the halls, but I was right!

Thank you Savvy_Sue. I didn't know about the distance priority, we live about 8 miles away so that should be ok. Costs a fortune for his bus pass though (nearly £800).

Well the distance is variable from uni to uni. 8 miles is not far!! Many London unis won't house you as a priority if you're inside the M25 for example.

    HI all,

I am looking to commence study of an MBA in Nov 2012 with the Open University.

I am looking at using a student loan. I believe OU courses are now covered??

My total household income is approx. £62,000 per year.

Will I still be able to apply for a student loan, as a full cost of an MBA is approx £16,000 over the 3 years

Student loans are only for undergraduate courses. You may find a PCDL is suited to your needs.

Do you have a copy of their reply? Any chance of either posting up the exact wording/PMing me it?

I'd be interested in taking this on if needbe.

Well at least it'll solve the problem of whether he'll live in or not! :)
