It's possible, as he can still be assessed on a Current Income basis. Sent the P45 and a Current Income Form from the 2009/2010 section of the website for both yourself and your husband.

He'll also need his P60U if he claimed benefits, and you'll need to send a P60 if you were working for the year just ended. Also if you had any other income eg dividends, you'd need to send evidence of this.

    It's not too late though.

As far as I know they don't take into account outgoings, and this is a situation a lot of students find themselves in.
Fill in your income and see what he'll get, and how much his accommodation etc costs. Then he can get a job and save the rest, and hopefully find a job near to the uni to do in term time, too. This is really common these days, so try not to worry. If he needs extra money during the term, he can apply to the Access To Learning fund, so there's nothing to worry about

    HTH :)

  • Hi,

I recently completed a professional practice degree (a degree taken while working over 1 and a half yrs) but have not yet been awarded my degree. I have now been offered a place on a degree course at Oxbridge.

This will effectively be my second degree and therefore I am not able to receive any funding from Student Finance. I am considering turning down my professional practice degree and telling them that I do not wish to be enrolled on their registrar of graduates in order for me to get student finance support for my Oxbridge degree.

I don't know if this will affect my offer although the offer is an unconditional offer is does say that it is subject to my paying the ELQ fee rate. I don't want to risk losing the offer but it will be impossible for me to fund my studies if I can't get support from Student Finance. When I made my application to the Uni I had effectively finished my work-based course and had received my results but I have not officially graduated or been put on the registrar of graduate.

Any advice would be much appreciated

Unless there is extenuating circumstances, Student Finance is based on you attending a degree not receivining a degree so not graduating from your current degree will not mean you will get student finance, it will just mean you will have wasted the last few years of your life working towards a degree. Plus I'd be suprised if your university refused to let you graduate because you've asked not to, after you've completed all the assessments and are due to graduate this summer.

Is a professional placement degree the same as a UG honours degree?
  • The Professional Practice degree is a UG BA(hons) so it does equate to the same thing.

I thought it might be possible because the wording on the gov regulations say if you "hold a qualification equal or lower" to the one you wish to study for. So I thought perhaps if I didn't actually "hold" the degree there might be a way around it?

Either way, if you didn't graduate you'd have to pay the fees yourself for that first year. The offer letter also indicates you're being accepted as an ELQ, so I imagine you would need to notify the university to get the offer changed.

    · I'm currently in my second year at University and received a Maintenance Loan, and Grant of ~£400 for the year.
    · I've just received my Finance Letter for next year and despite my parents' situations not changing, I have received no Maintenance Grant.
    · I rang SLC and was told that the household income was far above the threshold for the Grant, even though I have been offered the base Loan + over a £1000 income assessed Loan.
    · Also checked on MSE and it says no loan is for incomes of over £50 grand which is no WAY what my parents earn!
Has anyone else been in this situation?
Is what they told me on the phone correct?
I have no idea how to progress with it, but it's the last thing I need right now!
Thank you for any help in advance,
    Grace
