my son is 19 and going to liverpool uni in sept.he had offers from others but due to ill health wanted to be close to home.he has ME [chronic fatigue syndrome].i am on dla and income support.claiming for him til sep 6th.will he get full student grant etc.will he get housing costs as he wants to live in halls so he hasnt got to travel.trying to minimise exertion!! he is going to try for dla but i dont know if he will get it.he has mentioned there is help for disabled students,he doesnt class himself as disabled but obviously he struggles with fatigue and major aches and pains.would he get help financially with the cost of a laptop so he doesnt have to sit at a desk to study,he finds it difficult for more than hour or so.what else can he apply for or would he be likely to get help with?i cant really help him much financially at the moment, had to pack work in last year.any suggestions or help greatly appreciated.

hi,wonder if someone knows as student finance don't seem to!
I have 2 loans from 97/98 nd 98/99 outstanding so I did not expect to get funding for all 3 years of current degree. I did get full loans and grants for my first year so assumed this year would get nothing. However, everytime I speak to someone at student finance I get told something different. One person said I would still get the basic maintenance loan, another said I shouldn't have had finance last year so may have to pay that back before gting this year (I declared my previous study on the application), another said I may get PLA as my OH income is so low.
    ????!!!!
    any ideas?

hi all i'm looking for a bit help if you can. I start uni this September as a mature student. All was going well with SLC until my partner lost her job. For10 weeks I kept being told that I didn't need to send her income details in, just complete a current year income assessment. However I called to chase it and was told that I did indeed need to send it in. We have now sent this information in, however my loan has now been approved waiting signature at the base levels. Does anyone know if this will change when they get round to processing her info? Thanks guys

Just a quick question for Taiko and Student_Advisor...

Because of some of the horror stories I've read, largely via www.thestudentroom.co.uk forums, whereby some people didn't receive any money through until February, how behind is the student finance this year?

I only applied for uni itself in April, got in the first few days of May and instantly went for my student loan...this application has been accepted and I am waiting for them to acknowledge receipt of the evidence I sent in about a month ago...just I am really panicking at the moment because I am currently on benefits and have no means of supporting myself for longer than a couple of weeks without student finance and don't want to starve or be evicted from my home!!

Also, I know I'll be entitled to the full amount of loans, etc. And I ticked the box to allow SLC to share information with UCAS and the Uni, so does this mean that the uni will automatically give me any bursary to which I am entitled, or do I need to (nicely) badger them myself?

Thanks in advance for help advised (PS I'm 24 and fully independent of/estranged from my single parent and was able to prove this to SLC via tax info from the last 3 (and more!) years.

On Monday, student finance facebook page:

Student Finance England We’re working on 10/11 applications received up to 24th April so don’t worry if you applied after this date and haven't heard from us yet.
  • Sorry to be a pain but I had an email from SLC today asking for "student eligibility evidence"; am I to take it that this means the P45s, P60s, birth certificate, etc or something like a UCAS letter to prove I am going to uni? I assume it is NOT the latter....

In response to Flickering Ember, I rang SFE today to chase up what they were doing with the evidence we had sent in for my daughter (registered post received by them on 1.5.10) as she had got another email reminding her that this evidence was needed.I got a recorded message saying it's taking 7 weeks to process evidence......7 weeks to the day since they received it by my calculations! I suspect that it isn't going to be any better than last year....

Hi, I've a slightly different problem to many of the posters here in that I've overpaid on one of my student loans. The balance was cleared in February 2009, but payments continued to be deducted from my salary until about June 2009.

What happens here? Do the SLC automatically refund overpayments at the end of some financial year, or do I have to chase down nearly £300?
What's the point of growing up if you can't be childish sometimes?

Does anyone know if I can apply for income assessed loan/grant as an independant even though previously I wasn't independant.

When I first came to uni it was based on my parents income at the time (around 19k) and I got the full loan/grant but since then the "allowence" has gone up and so has my mums income (although not by the same amount as the allowence has gone up) and under the new limits I would get full grant still but apparently my mums current income is still assessed againts the limits when I started uni, almost 5 years ago!

What annoys me is that since coming to uni I have not lived with, or even seen my parents and have been fully supporting myself, yet I am still considered to be dependant! Is there anyway round this?
