    · I'm currently in my second year at University and received a Maintenance Loan, and Grant of ~£400 for the year.
    · I've just received my Finance Letter for next year and despite my parents' situations not changing, I have received no Maintenance Grant.
    · I rang SLC and was told that the household income was far above the threshold for the Grant, even though I have been offered the base Loan + over a £1000 income assessed Loan.
    · Also checked on MSE and it says no loan is for incomes of over £50 grand which is no WAY what my parents earn!
Has anyone else been in this situation?
Is what they told me on the phone correct?

Have you spoken to your parents to check what their household income is to make sure that they don't earn above the threshold? If you are about to enter your third year I presume you started in 08/09? If so you should get some grant providing your parents' household income is less than £60,032.
The fact that you got £400 grant last year means that your household income is above £50,000 (again, referring to the table on the link above).
Taiko and Student_advisor are likely to be able to give you more details and tell you if you can apply to be reassessed.

I went to uni years ago for just one term, got student finance and fees paid. just finished uni last year and had no trouble getting support for my entire degree...but when I go to my account on studentfinance direct, my previous loan and grants were non existent! Any ideas???

Can anyone advise.....my daughter is starting a Nursing Diploma in September and as far as we can work out, will receive a NHS bursary of between £6000-£7000 (non-means tested)

Her rent is £111 pw for campus accomodation, therefore just under £4500. Is there anything else she can apply for ? Our earnings would be in the region of £40000.

She has the ability to transfer her job (McD's) but because of the intensity of her course, doesn't think she will have the time to work.

No idea how she will cope on £2000 a year for living. She is currently looking into Students overdrafts.

    Any ideas

    !!!!!!!

    It's easy!

I get my accomondation paid for and just over £2,000 to live off a year from gifts. This is to cover all outgoings apart from rent, so it includes, food, petrol, car maintenance, getting drunk, bills for the house(!). I usually end up with some at the end to save with.

I did also have a part time job to go with this but this was just play money really.

She needs to create a budget.

    Does her rent include bills?

As lokolo said, she needs to make a budget. She'll have holidays which she can work in to raise extra cash, and many nursing students sign up to do bank work at local hospitals, care homes etc... as care assistants which allow them to pick up shifts when they have the time, gaining money and valuable work experience at the same time.

Having a student overdraft is good for emergencies but if at all possible need to be kept as emergencies (such as a gap between bills going out and money coming in, not emergencies such as not having the money to go to the pub).

Asked my parents, and they told me the following:

"Taxable total for the year 2008-2009: just under £57,000.00 .. These are totals that may or may not include our pension contributions, which total about £4,500 for the two of us. They're supposed to be taken into account I think."

Many thanks in advance, I really do appreciate it.

Were those into a private pension or employers?

Also, can I just confirm you were a 2008 starter, and hadn't done any degree level study previously?
  • Hi there,

From September I will have 2 students at full time uni and one going in to the 6th form. I know an allowance or deduction from our income is made for each child but can you tell me how much it is, before the income calculation for the maintenance grant is done.

    Many thanks,
    Gill

ps - why is info like this not available in the direct.gov site - bonkers!!!
