Sylvan it will depend if the course is a 1 year foundation course. It will also have to be towards a degree. If not then this would have be funded from another source.

    Thanks.
Do you know whether he would still be able to get EMA in that case?

EMA is usually upto 19, but he could apply for Adult Learners Grant instead

He won't be 19 till June 2011. Could he claim EMA till his 19th birthday, even if the course continues after that?

If he doesn't get a place at university can he just keep trying, year after year, or is there a limit?

EMA is for 16, 17, 18 year olds. However if the student turns 19 before the end of the academic year they can still get it until the end of the year. For example I turned 19 in the March of my last year of A-level but got EMA until the end of the academic year.
For the next academic year I think I would've had to apply for an Adult Learning Grant instead of EMA - still up to £30 a week but available to people 19+

So if your son is eligible for EMA then he'll be able to claim it upto the end of the academic year that he turns 19. If the course continues for a further year he should be able to apply for ALG.

He can apply to university as many times as he wants.
  • Hi all,
I'm lost in the maze of information called the internet. Feeling a bit confused so I was hoping somebody could give some advice.
I am 27, my partner is 24 and we have a 1 year old baby. I have unfortunately been on ESA benefit for 4 months, although now getting over a few problems and looking for part time work again. Anyway, I am applying for a foundation degree, in view to going onto a full time degree later. I'm not sure how it would work with the finance? I know I could get a student loan but would my partner be able to get anything in benefits as she will be with the baby, and would we still get housing benefit?
Does anybody know if there is any other support for a mature student like myself?
    thanks
oops, I just realised I should probably make a new thread...
  • Hi

We are a bit confused about how much money my son should receive for his Maintenance grant.

ok, he lives at home with me (mother). I am on income support and I receive DLA as well, I also qualify for council tax benefit.

My son does not earn any other income apart from careres allowance for me.

He started his UNI course in 2005.

From reading the guide to financial support for higher education students it looks like he should receive the full grant of £2906.00 as he started his course before September 2008. He has been informed that he is only entitled to £1000.

Is the £1000 correct or have we missed something in filling in the forms, please?
Wow, I got 3 *, when did that happen :j:T:p

    Help needed.

I'm on the old system as I started my degree in 1997. I defer my replayments as I don't earn enough. I'm always just below the threshold. I anticipate a job opportunity soon which will mean a decent pay rise. It will also mean an hour extra travelling each way each day. This means I could ultimately be worse off for my promotion though I'll be earning more and will undoubtedly be over the threshold. I don't want to turn down a better job but I'm worried that I'll be penalised for this by TLC. Would they take my increased expenditure into account?

The simple answer is no, I'm afraid. I think that you'll have to look at this as being an investment in your future rather than a short term financial boost; it was bound to happen sometime.

(Don't mean to sound unsympathetic as I've been in that position myself.)
  • Dont know if this is the right place to ask this but I have been on maternity leave since May 09 returning to work at the end of January 10 so this Feb pay will be my first full wages. My employer offers a back to work bonus for those returning to employment which I will also receive in this pay. My query is that I have been deducted £289 for my student loan this month yet I have only earned £13,000 so far this year, is this right and is there anything I can do about this? it just seems an awful lot and I thought student loan deductions where a % of your earnings over £15,000.
