Hi i hope i am on the right thread.
My colleague is having some trouble with SLC. She graduated in 1998 and is under the old style of student loan.
She has paid it back in parts- as in career break for family and then deferring as and when necessary.
The problem has occurred lately. She is on a similar contract to myself and is paid termly and not for holidays or time off ( lately it has been snow) Now she was earning just below the threshold- including family tax credits and child benefit. But she still paid, however recently her work dropped off. She has put wage slips in and has just received a reply from SLC that as she is paid petrol ( she pays out and it is claimed back, the same for any student related expenses, such as books etc) that this has put her over the threshold amount.
She has also explained that this month is obviously a low amount wage wise, she has also said that feb half term - won't be paid and today received news like myself that her time has been reduced.
SLC has now said she owes arrears of two months- she has paid £50 today and they say she owes £170 now for the last two months. Obviously next month will be due around Feb 20th.
She has had a look on the HRMC website and the links just take her back to main page ( i tried and it did the same thing) Basically she is looking to see if petrol is taken into account, as although it could be classed as a perk as such, she pays out and then claims back- the amount obviously varies and it is often two months before payment so she will be paying out a considerable amount. We have to travel and transport the pupils.
The fact that she is now on half the wages and also that SLC would, i have thought, take into account that we are not paid holidays have put the whole amount into question. So wages should be calculated by taking at least 12/13 weeks off the amount after multiplying the monthly wage by 12.
I just thought i would ask to see if there is any help out there. She has e mailed and spoken to SLC, they just seem focused on collecting arrears and said they will need the next two months wage slips. During which time she will have accrued more arrears.
Anyone know how to help her?
Many thanks.

Does your friend pay the SLC via PAYE or Self-Assessment? If it's PAYE the amount she pays should be 9% of each wage then at the end of the year if she's overpaid because she hasn't reached the threshold over the total year she can claim it back.0 -
Thanks for your reply MrsManda- she is on the old style student loan.
I can understand totally what you are saying- the problem is that she has only started back to work in September of last year and it all seems a bit mixed up. As far as i am aware she was paying by Direct debit originally as the amount is a fixed amount. Now because she had a career break- (she has two little ones) she was able to defer the student loan.
So when it came time to get a deferment she decided she wanted to repay it-SLC kept ringing her because she hadn't deferred and no DD in place- they did not re set it up ( details were still the same)- she paid by debit card to bring the account up to date. In December she had a reduced timetable and then Christmas period. This prompted her to apply to SLC for a deferment, they said they would suspend the account for two weeks until a decision was made.
I think the problem is that because of the hours she is now on that she will be unable to meet the set payments and therefore by the end of the year will more than likely be in further arrears and this will then be subject to other actions if i read correctly.
I am just wondering why they are taking petrol into consideration as we are paid when we pick up student and transfer to schools etc. But not the journey to and from home as most people have to pay their own travel expenses. So as such it is not a gratuity but an essential for the job.
Oh and it is PAYE as in the company pay tax and NI contributions at the appropriate rate.
I have shown her this thread and i hope she will get some answers by Monday. She has e mailed SLC for a break down of how they have reached the decision and also what i have just mentioned about the petrol.Blackadder: Am I jumping the gun, Baldrick, or are the words 'I have a cunning plan' marching with ill-deserved confidence in the direction of this conversation?

Can anyone help me?
I'm repeating my first year due to personal health issues. However I'm also struggling this time around.
I wondered, if I withdrew now and took a year out too, where would I stand with student finance?
Thanks

I've just recieved a letter from the student loans company stating that I owe them nearly £500 from a maintenance loan for 08/09 as I left my course in the November.
I've already paid them back £322 last year and have since received a final award notice which stated I didn't have any other amounts outstanding.
What on earth are they playing at?No longer using this account for new posts from 20130 -
This could be a maintenance grant rather than a loan. If it is then the payment is due straight away0

Hi,
I have just been sent out a letter from the SLC telling me that I have not been paying my student loans. I know that because I have been working in the republic of Ireland for the last 3 years but living in northern ireland. They are telling me if they have to hunt me down for my detail the will add the additional fees to my student loan. Can they do this? are they in the right chasing me for money even when I'm working in the republic of ireland? how long can i hold out until the catch up with me and i am forced to pay the money monthly through a direct debit???
Thanks in advance for you help on these matters
Best Regards
