Hang on, do the Sainsburys basics really taste okay? I'm currently down to the Red Label but wondered if it might be worth dropping another level. As someone mentioned, it is only 28p...

I was a PG Tips girl - until the price became so exhorbitant. I tried Lidl cheapo but did not like it, thought I might have to work my way through all the cheap ones but stopped at Sainsbury Basic. Not, it is not as good as PG Tips but it is certainly enjoyable. Try a box - at 28p you can hardly loose, but I really think you'll like it!

Same here,I think they are the best value so far.£1.53 in our Lidl's.Also worth noting the weight as these and Sainsbury's (160 bags) are 500g.Most of the cheaper teabags are much les so not surprising they taste like Knats pee.:rotfl:

Just checked on the Sainsburys Basics tea bags packaging and the weight is 250g for 80 so exactly the same. It's clear that Sainsbugs are subsidising these tea bags by probably in the region of 50% of cost...

Having tried almost every type of Supermarket Brand Earl Grey Tea,
I can honestly say that Twinings is awful, Morrisons and the Co-op are not great either,
M&S is rather good and Sainsburys is good too.

Reason for not liking any but the last 2, is the after taste that you get from the other brands.
How the tea tastes comes above price any day.

This may only be helpful to any Earl Grey Tea Drinkers.
But it can't be just me that drinks it.

I saw that in our local co-op - at £1.55 for 250g I thought it was good value, so I'm going to buy that next time.

Just thought i'd buy some Asda smartprice teabags, 28p for 80 bags, and as a PG TIPS drinker, there not to bad, thought they where going to taste disgusting, but no, not a bad taste, i remember buying some from tesco's which where around twice that price, one cup was enough of those. As i have 6 boxes of pgtips at the moment to get through i wont be changing but handy to know if money gets tight i can buy those if and when i run out.
  • Have Sainsbury's cheapies improved again? I used to buy them for work when they were the round bags. Then they changed to square(ish) bags and tasted like floor-sweepings.

Surprised nobody has mentioned a brand called Punjana which I've found on offer at Morrisons. Best "everyday" bags I've had.

For home though, nothing beats loose leaf tea. Doesn't overbrew like teabags do so you can make a large pot and dip into it over an hour or so. If it goes cool, nuke it as one other poster says.

Agree about the water quality affecting taste. My supply has a heavy chlorine taste and I have to use a water filter for tea (and other drinks) for tea to be drinkable.

Off to put the kettle on,
    Tony.

One thing that has surprised me in the thread is the number of people who appear to have sampled floor sweepings at some stage in their life. :D
