Hi there needing some advice. I recently purchased a new car from an arnold clark branch in scotland. I purchased the car on hire purchase from finance company that arnold clark where dealing with called GE money. Now i was just looking at the hire purchase documents when moving house yesterday and noticed that car reg on the document is not the same as my new car. One letter out. Now it was arnold clark that arranged all of this and the information on these documents are completely wrong. Can someone advise me what i should do. Now does that mean that i am paying for a car that i dont have. Considering the hire purchase is for a different reg than my own? Should i maybe think about contacting a lawyer considering that this is quite a big mistake to be made. Can someone please help!

Just stop paying it, the car is yours.
That simple slip of the pen whilst filling out the form has cost them the car, and you win one for nothing.
Claim back all the money you have paid up until now aswell, Happy Motoring:)
Beware of imitations e.g. Robert Sterling0 -
What does the V5C say?
It is not unknown for number plates to be produced wrongly... even front and back can be different!0 -

As Keith said chack the V5 for the reg and chassis number. Hopefully it's not a Jerry.;)
Also what vrm is on your insurance?Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
Have you checked the chassis number on the agreement - is it the same as on the V5?
It sounds like a simple error on the dealers part assuming there is no discrepancy with the chassis number
You just need to advise the Finance company to amend their records to the correct registration number.
The Finance company may ask to sign a modifying agreement which is just a way of ensuring their title is properly recorded0 -

All i can say is good luck if you try to go down this road.
Haven't been involved with finance for a while but this is how i would assess the situation:
HP means the money you are lent is secured against the car you buy. Just because they have made a mistake on the VRM number does not mean you do not owe them any money. At best they would just treat it as a unsecured loan and chase you using balifs and court proceedings.
However they could probably get the court to honour the contract regardless of the mistake as it was the intention of both parties to be bound by the agreement on the car you purchased.0 -
I am just not happy at all at the service i have recieved. Is it in my right to tell arnold clark to take the car back and ask for the finance agreement to be cancelled because of this. As none of this was my fault. I have really been paying for a car that i do not even own. And i have had to change my insurance becuase i took the registration from the documents supplied to me before i even saw the car. So can i say that this is a breach of contract, hand the car back and recieve a full refund of money paid to the car from when i got it on october last year.0

Well i changed my insurance last week. As i looked at the insuramce cover doc and noticed it was one number out. I just thought that someone at the call centre had picked me up wrong when i quoted the reg. Now i changed the reg last week and got my new cover doc in. But when i went to put it with the other vehicle docs thats when i noticed this. Now i have just found out it is defenently the number plates that are wrong. But i'm now going to have to change the insurance all over again. Now i am seriously mad about this. I have been driving a car with false plates for over 6 months now through no fault of my own. Can someone please advise me what they think i should do because i am not just going to accept arnold clark changing the number plates over. I want some sort of compensation for this. Now if i had been stopped by the police i could have been in serious trouble. So by law arnold clark has committed a crime by doing this. Should i contact the police?0

I agree its a sorry state, But at the end of the day what do you need compensation for? Granted you have had to make a few phonecalls, But i hardly see this amounting to more than a couple of quid.
People make mistakes, They are only human, At the end of the day you still got the same car, just the wrong number plates.War does not decide who is right, It decides who is left.0
