I used to smoke and I bought one of those JML fresh air bowls - I cant for the life of me think what they are properly called - you put water in them with a couple of drops of essential oil, the lid goes on and it circulates the water. Its meant to clean the air - I dont know about that but the smell is very sutble. If I smell too strong an air fresher then it can bring on a migraine.

Although I dont smoke anymore I still love using it. When we had colds recently I used Euculytus (sp) oil and it was great. Obviously not the cheapest option though.

I have also used the chefs candle from Lakeland for cooking smells and that works very well.

think you meant the JML air globe? I have 2! not the same brand though, I bought them from overseas where there isn't a monopoly by JML and they were much cheaper! and I love them!! have the big one downstairs, and a little one in the bedroom. like you said they are subtle and not overpowering at all. and the gentle swishing of the water is quite plesant to fall asleep to :D I get a migraine from almost all other air freshners but not this, this seems to bring on a really fresh feel!

not sure if you are supposed to use normal essential oils in it though! when I bought it I asked the lady what can I use when I run out of the special water based essential oils they come with, she said, dun put normal essential oil in as it will clog up the motor in the long run! just some water is better than nothing, it will still freshen the air up. I was thinking maybe I'll boil some lavender or rose petals in water and use that? or ironing linen water?? not sure how to make my own eucalyptus one though? love that for when we have stuffy noses! :T

Use essential oils in a burner, easiest and healthiest way to perfume the air. Beware of scented candles, some of them have artificial oils and the wax gives out fumes - only use natural soya or beeswax candles if you can.

Beeswax candles in themselves have a lovely honey-smell, but they are quite costly.

Or, fill a spray bottle with warm water and add some essential oil drops (chang mai for very fresh smell, ylang ylang for warm smell, cinnamon for spicy smell or tea-tree for "clean" smell) and spray around the room.

    Hi Kataratarina,

Yankee candle do wax tarts in clean cotton. They are gorgeous and can be re-used over and over again until the smell begins to fade. I usually buy them in my local yankee candle shop or homebase for about 85p.

  • I seen them but they didnt have clean cotton, so does that mean what i've done isnt going to last as long as the wax tarts?

I have no idea how long the candle will last, but it's worth a try. I'd be really interested in how long your candle lasts if you wouldn't mind posting back because it may well be more cost effective than the tarts.

Just a tip, if you have trouble getting the wax out of your burner (like I did) pop it into the fridge for an hour and it should slip out easily with the help of a blunt knife.

  • Good morning all,

I'm going to do my food shopping later and really need to freshen my house. I usually use plug ins (i know not good) but I have 4 males in the house,2 cats and an extremely smelly dog

All of my plug ins have finally run out and seeing as I use 5 around the house its expensive.. I do have at least 1 window open in every room in the house all the time (except the kitchen when I go out) My bathroom window is open 365 days a yr,even if you do sit down and get a shock in winter! :rotfl:

I love the smell of fresh ginger, could I get some and cut it up and put around the house? Will it last? Or what else could I use? I'm not feeling too well this morning,am very tired,so apologies if there are similar threads on here :o
  • Essential oils are a good way of scenting the home - add a few drops to cooton wool balls and dot around the house. You can top up as needed.
