have to say, plug in freshners are my vice along with chocolate...i have 2 kids (ok, one but my partner is like a kid) and the plug in's are great...i get mine from sainsburys as their own brand ones are about £1 less than the branded ones.0

I used to smoke and I bought one of those JML fresh air bowls - I cant for the life of me think what they are properly called - you put water in them with a couple of drops of essential oil, the lid goes on and it circulates the water. Its meant to clean the air - I dont know about that but the smell is very sutble. If I smell too strong an air fresher then it can bring on a migraine.
Although I dont smoke anymore I still love using it. When we had colds recently I used Euculytus (sp) oil and it was great. Obviously not the cheapest option though.
I have also used the chefs candle from Lakeland for cooking smells and that works very well.0 -
I cannot abide normal air fresheners (aerosol/plugin etc) as they make me breathe funny, but I was thinking about one of these. Does anyone have any experience of these or know if they are any good (the reviews seem very good for them)? We have a dog, a cat, three children and a plumber OH who can smell a little 'fresh' when he comes home from work depending on the job he's been doing lol.

I was told they can overheat when the fragrance dries up.... is it, going to have another look....Blackpool_Saver is female, and does not live in Blackpool0 -
I've heard the fire-risk details from a member of the fire brigade. I won't have them in the flat now! They can over heat and melt remarkably easily if left on for too long.
Go with the oil burner - I have either vanilla or lemongrass, both are very light and fresh. Some days, it's just not worth chewing through the leather straps....

Im very new to the old style concept and have picked up some excellent tips from this forum! so firstly thanks to all the contributers!
One of the things i would really like to fix though is bad smells. I live with my husband and 2 year old. We also have a large dog and 2 cats. Im becoming really depressed being in my house though as it smells so bad! Downstairs is the worst area. whenever i leave the house and re-enter it a short while later the smell is horrible! I cant pin point what it is exactly, i think a mixture of dog/cat/sweaty shoes in the hallway/food smells from the kitchen. just a big smelly combination! I have tried airfreshners (before i read this thread, wont be buying anymore!) and am going to try some of the ideas in this thread. However, im not convinced they will do the trick, i feel like i need something heavy duty to get rid of the smell.
Is there anything out there that was designed to handle mega smell problems?
Also i would love to make my own pot purri. some people talked about using orange peel, how do you preserve something like that? dont they rot?
Thank you in advance for any advise! (This is my first house, my mum lives on the other side of the world, so i am still learning how to run a household!)

I know this sounds obvious, but it's only something I started actually doing after reading the OS boards - Open windows every day (preferably one upstairs and one downstairs as a minimum, to get a good air flow). That will get rid of the worst and then you could try some of the other ideas on this thread. Others may have other suggestions, though.
I'm also interested in home-made pot pourri...0 -

I HATE air freshners with a passion as they really make my chest go tight and throat sore.
Most I stretch to is a quick squirt of febreeze or the like on the cutrains now and then or bed linen just to freshen up the whole room really. As we always seem to having something drying indoors at present I find the smell of clean washing is a good freshner!0 -
Nothing like a potted hyacinth in flower for a natural air fresherner (unless you get hayfever of course...)Yeah, whatever. I'm a grown up, I can take it...0
