  • Wow - so many wonderful ideas. Thank you. I've got essential oils and spices and lavender, so I'm going to have a play around making nice smells.

But, JackieO, I loved your post! What really struck me was the idea that 'home' should smell of the love and care that goes into maintaining it. I'm not about to start your mother's punishing regime, but am inspired to hunt down a good old-fashioned smelling furniture polish (in fact, I know Lakeland does a 'furniture balm' which they say smells of stately homes). I'm a Stardrops gal at heart, but maybe a few additions could be made to my cleaning arsenal if they smell particularly homely (and natural).

And I'm steering clear of commercial air fresheners for good...

air fresheners have been linked with diarrohea and ear ache in children and depression in women!!!!
So i never use them i too use an oil burner got it from the pound shop.
I burn lavender oil every evening as i find it relaxes the kids really well ready for bed.
I used to use joss sticks until i read that they give off as much carbon monoxide as a cigarette!!!!

Also a good tip is to spray a bit of your fave perfume on the bottom of your radiator as the radiator warms up the fragrance fills the room not very money saving so i only do it when expecting visitors!!!

DH and I visited some friends about 18 months ago in their new high rise apartment. The place looked immaculate, but they had plug in air fresheners everywhere as well as some freestanding ones. My DH woke up during the night and couldn't get his breath, it was really scary. He only recovered a bit when we opened a window really wide so he could get some real fresh air. The experience was really frightening for us both. I don't use air fresheners personally as I have never believed that they "freshen" air. As others have posted we use a combination of open windows/doors and essential oils. I really believe that these chemicals posing as air fresheners are actually dangerous.

Those plug ins give me migraine, They cannot be good for you.

Not only are they not good for you. In some cases they can be positively dangerous because a while back I believe they were the source of major house fires, because the heat generated from the plug-in types melted the plastic. My b-i-l who works in the Fire Service warned us NEVER to use plug-ins for this reason. Since then I've used a combination of open windows and burning aromatic oils whenever I want to freshen up a room and get rid of smells.

I just can't believe anyone would actually hand over money for something like this when you can just open a window, never mind the health and safety dangers:confused:

Yes agree - JackieO's post strikes a chord. Houses smell of things for a reason, and I have similar memories - not only of the smell of furniture polish and the faint whiff of bleach my mother used to clean the granite bathroom floor, but also that the house could just smell of 'summer' when the weather was warm. I am also aware that no matter how much we ventilate, our houses smell of, well, themselves if you see what I mean. Have you ever come back from a long-ish holiday and just loved being back in your own, familiarly smelling surroundings?
So no artificial smellies for me. (Having said that, I do occasionaly grab a scented candle when a rodent has obviously died between the floorboards! But would call that force majeure....... :-)

We have secondary glazing over sash windows - the inner glass is closed at the moment but the outer glass hasn't been closed in about 15 years! I HATE the artificial smells from things which cost money... fresh air is all that is needed. I can't abide the smells from plug-ins, press and fresh or any other air freshener which comes along.

I recently spent one night with a very dear friend who had a thing which regularly 'pooofed' out a spray of freshener in the bedroom every 30 minutes - I had to open the window and stick it on the ledge overnight and even then was ill for the next few days from the smell!

Matchs in the bathroom are brilliant. Fresh air in the rest of the house can't be beaten. Real coffee/fresh bread and cooking bacon are an added bonus.

    Down with manufactured/artificial smells.
  • Ambi Pur 3Volution plug in air fresheners!!!! These are definitely NOT MSE items!!

There are approx £3.50 each and I have 3 (YES 3!!!!) in my lounge - it makes it smell SOoooooooooooo lovely but I cannot justify this cost if I am to make any headway in slayng my debts in 2009!!

Has anyone got any OS ideas that will still keep my lounge smelling lovely??
