  • Thats a good idea, however my Tesco's is tiny (i work there!) and I know we don't sell them and our town is very small....but will keep my eyes open..tnx
  • If you manage to get hold of some essential oils (you can order them easily online too) and put them on cotton wool as suggested above, you can also pop them in your hoover bag/bucket which can stop the dog/cat hair smell coming back out whilst you are trying to hoover up! Or for winter, put them behind your radiator so when they heat up you get a lovely smell.

Some naturally scented candles, like the ones with actual vanilla/lavender etc oils in rather than artificially perfume scented ones work well, or oil burners.

I find using bicarb and lemon juice/vinegar when cleaning around the house really helps to neutralise any smells too.

I use essential oil burners and open windows to freshen my home, I also put a couple of drops of oil on the filter of my hoover everytime I use it.

I make my own spray air freshener too for the times when you need a quick freshen up. Fill a spray bottle with water, and add a few drops of essential oil, each time you go to use it give the bottle a quick shake.

There's some nice recipes for your own spray here:

It says to use distilled water but I just use ordinary tap water. I sometimes put a teaspoon of vodka in too because it helps the oils to mix with the water and also makes the smell last a bit longer. I wouldn't bother buying a bottle of vodka but my OH or DS seem to get miniatures in gift sets every Christmas so I nick them for my air fresheners! :D

  • I use dried lavender or dried scented roses and put them in a spray bottle with a little vodka. And give the place a good misting you can use essential oils too.
Has your town got a Wilkinsons? because they do essential oils in there.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

  • whilst my tip won't make your house smell nice it is a VERY quick and easy way to get rid of foul smells cheaply

    light a candle
let it burn for a about 5 minutes
    blow it out
carry the candle around the room that smells so the smoke spreads well

voila, smell is gone and for me it's a bonus because i love the smell of candles that have been put out :T

I absolutely adore oilburners, but I would be wary of them as you have 2 cats and a dog. Not too bad if you're in the room where they're lit, but you'd be taking a risk to even leave it for a couple of minutes.
  • kind of related......we love smoked haddock but hate the lingering smell which is even around the next day despite opening windows and spraying with Oust.
    Any tips please?:o

  • I have a slightly different problem.Last week my great neighbour ,bless him cleared out my shed at the bottom of the garden. He bagged up all the junk as best he could and as I have a seven seater car I dropped the back two seat to make room for the junk .We then took it all to the tip, as my dustmen are a bit fussy what ther delicate little hands will lift ,any thing over a teaspoon and its a no-no.Well he junked all my odds and sods for me, and I was very pleased as I couldn't physically lift things myself. Only trouble is I don't know if there was some white spirit in amongst the junk but my car smells very strongly of it and although I have had the back boot gate open and drive with all the windows down I can't seem to shift the smell. I tried spraying it with oust but even thats not working .So any ideas how I can rid my car of smelling like a paint factory I can't see that anything has spilt anywhere as the boot is dry as a bone but the smell is a bit over powering
