Just started the mortgage-jar (until better money-pot is found).. Thanks for all the inspiration here!

Silly question but how does the bank respond to you coming in with your pot of small change? I seem to remember my bank not wanting to deal with that unless it was pre-counted in special bags?

    Hello M_dorph

Most banks will have the little plastic bags for change to be sorted and counted just ask for a load when you next visit your branch,
to save time and hassle for other people in the bank queue bag your change so that it can be paid into your account
the amounts the bags should hold are :-

£1 in 1p or 2p coins (no mixed coins though)
    £5 " 5p or 10p
    £10 " 20p or 50p
    £20 " £1 or £2

You dont have to put exactly the above amounts in just as long as they are sepearate
and you know how much is in them :)
I make a list of the coins i`m depositing and tick them off when the cashier takes them and checks the amounts.
Also my tip is do this when the banks are quiet ie avoid lunch times etc.
    Regards Megatimbo

  • Love the name! Can't wait to see what you call your pig!
  • Finally got around to listing a few bits on ebay - been a bit quiet since last week, should have a couple of payments coming in this week hopefully but apart from that not a lot doing!

I just wanted to say that I spent ages in Elgin today looking for a piggy bank. I found a couple of small ones - but nothing of a substantial size - hoping for big things!!! Eventually found a rather large (kind of fat) blue dog at the Cancer Research Charity Shop and so we bought him. His name is Harry and the children are making a sign saying 'My name is Harry - FEED ME!' - they already have too!

  • Being new to MSE and reading this thread last week I think this mortgage pig idea is great. We have just been given (what timing)! not a piggy bank but ...a bright pottery cerise pink boot with multi-coloured polka dots which fits nicely on our kitchen shelf. We have yet to put some coins in but we can see it every day - just needs some think bubbles to add encouragement. Thanks for sharing your idea.
    Can't resist a bargain!!
  • Welcome to harry and the bootylicous!
No bids on my ebay stuff - hoping one thing goes well - it was a freebie so anything I get would be good. Have been a little behind in earning money this month, lucky I had the money from my £2 coin savings, I think people are cutting back for xmas, so will have to see how the next few months go.
My older brother is getting married soon, but luckily they are going on honeymoon straight from the registry office, they live together so didn't really want anything so we put in some holiday money each, I think they had the right idea, the family will be there to see them get married but they are keeping costs down by not having a lavish reception. I wish I'd done something like that! Same as overpaying - wish I'd done that earlier!!
  • Updated my total, ebay sales going slowly! I think I'm going to make about another £100 this month, so without the £2 coins saving roughly about the same as last month. Hows everybody else doing!?
