I got my mortgagte pig last week from woolies it a paint your own one so I've painted multi-colour pound signs all over him, he's got about fourty pound. Though today he's gone from a mortgage pig to a renovation pig as leak has sprung in pipe work under the bathroom and so far OH has put a hole in kitchen ceiling, taken the tiles of bathroom and toilet walls and lifted the laminate takingthe paint off the skirting boards and still no sign of where the leak is coming from. Oh well such is life:rolleyes:GC: £400/ £00

Rang up HSBC yesterday to find out about overpaying the mortgage. We are in a fixed rate that finishes at the end of November.
Apparently we can only overpay 20% of our standards monthly payments!
I guess its still worth doing and then put the rest of my 'overpayment' in the bank. Then either use it to do some work to the house or pay it off the mortgage in a lump sum when the fixed rate finishes.....
As for my pig....I guess he'll just get emptied into the account with the rest of the overpayments....
Its a bit disheartening though...0 -
But thats a start - 20& and then put the savings to earn interest, at least when the term ends you'll have a tidy little sum to pay off more.0

I should be on track this month for about a £400 overpayment, have already transferred £80+ across wainting for a cheque to clear to pay off the rest.0

Hi all
I read original post a few days ago, and have been mulling ever since.
didnt buy a pig, cos i believe there is no point spending money to save money!!!
however the idea is just brilliant and i now have a "piggy" bank ok its a house shaped one that my son had. but it holds the dosh.
we started yesterday with all the change from my change jar, and what daughter had in her change mug (dont ask me) and what son had spare in his wallet.
we now have the grand total of £43.27
our goals are a wee bit smaller at present, we want £100 for a local day out.
but after that (which we have nearly halfway reached) son wants a guitar, daughter wants attic boarding out for her and then i want to start on mortgage (am fixed rate til 08 )
what a brilliant idea and many thanks to original poster.
btw my kids both still at school, so its great to see them agreeing on something, and not squandering their money on stuff.
sx63 mortgage payments to go.

I have recently joined Money Saving Expert and am finding these ideas quite interesting and rather strange. Needless to say I went out and brought two pigs!! My family think I've gone nuts but if it helps in the long run!
It's better than keeping it in a glass in the cupboard because everyone keeps taking the coins and spending them.
Our joint family debt is £65,000 and thad doesn't include the mortgage so we have a long way to go.0 -
Huge pats on the back to all of you and welcome to our select wee club.
Someone up there must have thought I was a bit too smug when my mortgage got paid off, cos it's all been downhill since then. Loads of things have broken one after the other over the last few weeks and OH had someone run into the back of his car yesterday. No-one hurt, not too much damage thankfully.
Money (we haven't got) has been flowing out the door like water. I will be glad when this wee phase passes. Soon. I hope. :rotfl:Herman - MP for all!0
