I would just like to thank the OP  - as so far in a couple of months I have managed to pay off an extra £150 of my mortgage! I found a rather large pig from the Gadgetshop, just been to look if they have any more - they don't seem to - but I did find this if anyone is interesting a cheap (but add on p&p at £3.95 - but you can get cashback from Quidco - so this will be reduced!) money box: http://www.gadgetshop.com/pws/ProductDetails.ice?ProductID=669 (currently only £1.95 - ok, its pink but even more obvious if you need an excuse to put money in it!!!!).

What do people call their pigs/money boxes? My large pink pig is called Porcha!!!!! :p

    Mine's a homemade papier mache one. ;)
  • We've got Noodle. Noodle is a rather ugly, but we love her, purple elephant that sits on top of our microwave. My eldest got it as a christmas present a number of years back but she'd lost her bung. I made her a new bung out of cardboard and stickytape and now she's as happy as larry. Used the kids' colouring pens to make her a nice sign saying "Give me your spare change and takeaway money and I'll pay the Northern Rock for you". DH is embarrassed in front of people, but he's just gone self employed this month so money is a very pressing issue.

Thanks for this idea - the kids were really excited and found bits of cash hanging around the house for me like it was a treasure hunt. 1ps mainly but starting small is good too. I really enjoy getting the children involved as they are slightly indulged at times and understanding that daddy's salary has just disappeared is important to me (they're four and six.)

  • MY Terramundi arrived from e bay his morning so is now sitting on the bookcase with a 'feed me silver' sign on him! We already have a coppers jar which we usually cash and have a meal out on, so this one is just for more valuable coins! My two girls are already discussing ways of how we're going to smash it when it's full and who's going to have the fortune card!
Didn't think I'd ever see the day when I got excited about having a new money box!:rotfl:
  • I've just been and banked this months money kindly looked after by Jean-Paul the Frog and Mabel the Pig which totalled £112 - not bad for my first overpayment I don't think :T

Why can I see this becoming rather addictive?

And why am I sitting here smiling smugly at nobody in particular? :o

  • Oh yes, I forgot to add that I also calculated that the £112 also saves an additional £252.16 in interest over the term of the mortgage too :D

question.. How do you calculate how much interest a payment made now would save you?

eg.. pay £100 now.. interest rate 5% x length of mortgage remaining (23 years 6 months).

It's just IF I calculated this correctly I just saved a massive £718.55 by paying £29 now!!
