Hi ladies- wasnt sure whether to post this on this thread or to set up a new thread...

I am currently 40 weeks + 3 at the moment ( my first pregnancy) and am waiting patiently for something to happen (am booked for induction next monday-eeeeeeeeeeeek!!) I suffer from epilepsy and have spent every day worried about the pregnancy, so cant believe I have got this far (I didnt even want to post on this thread, as I was trying to be cautious!)

I have tried to be as money saving for this pregnancy- and thanks to the likes of freecycle- have been able to pick up quite a few baby items:)

I have a few questions I wanted to ask and hope someone may be able to help (they are a bit varied, soz!)

1- Can anyone recommend cheap but effective sterilisation product- i notice some are for the microwave and others are electric- I just dont kjnow which would be best?

2- What type of feeding bottles are best- ie ones that reduce wind build up for the baby?

3 - Breastfeeding- up until now, i have just been worried about the delivery, now I realise i need to think post delivery- and am not sure whether to breastfeed or not- anyway, I was wondering if anyone could recommend a manual breast pump or are they pretty much alike?

4- And finally general question- is there any one out there that has suffered from epilepsy and got through this ok? I have worried so much over this- the hospital, etc have been great with me, and have always deals with my woes very seriously. I have told them that they need to give me pain relief as soon as poss because, pain will make me panic and that could bring on a fit- I have been fit free for three years but with epilepsy you dont know

THanks for any replies - i am too tired to go through all the pregnancy threads to see if any of these have been discussed- sorry- I can only manage about an hour out of bed then back for another nap- so brain capability at all time low

Good luck to all you ladies that are expecting- hope all is well :)

    Morning everyone.

ML - welcome back. Sounds like you had a really nice break.

Jillie - that pram does look like a good price. I really like the colour of red, and if you think it ticks all of the boxes (or as many as poss) for you, then go for it. If you have Tesco Clubcard reward points you can get it for half price I think. MIL is ordering our car seat from Tesco with her points so getting it much cheaper than normal.

I would suggest that you make sure you go to a shop and try the pram out - folding it, lifting it etc. It's amazing how many aren't as easy to fold as you would think. We haven't found the perfect pram for us, but have ended up ordering the Loola Up as I think it's closest to what we want. It does have a reversible pushchair, but I don't think there are a lot that do, so I wouldn't worry to much about it.

Searching - enjoy your day out shopping! Hope you cheer yourself up with your apple pie!

    Nozza -
We're using cold water sterilisation. We used an electric one last time, but I wanted to try cold water this time, as a friend used it and said it was pretty easy and I'm always for low tech. LOL

As far as bottles are concerned - we bought a couple tommee tippee ones that are supposed to reduce the wind build up. We'll see how they work, I guess.

One thing to remember about breastfeeding - you can always try it and if you decide it's not for you and baby, you can switch to formula. Not really easy or feasible the other way around (formula first, then switch to breastfeeding!). It's certainly cheaper and less hassle than making bottles in the middle of the night! LOL It can sometimes be a bit difficult getting used to, and don't be afraid to ask for support in hospital or with visits at home afterwards. But if you choose formula, that's great too. Whatever you're most comfortable with.

Best of luck to you! Labour vibes! And welcome to the thread!

    Updating to keep myself motivated:

Dishes (first lot done; second lot after lunch after the first lot air dries and I put it away)
Give away various stuff to various people who are coming for it (later)
Write a lot of this paper
    [STRIKE]Send stuff over to S
Check if reimbursement form is on my laptop[/STRIKE] It isn't
[STRIKE]Fill it in and print it out if so[/STRIKE] Tomorrow morning
    [STRIKE]Pack bag for tomorrow[/STRIKE]
[STRIKE]Do some cleaning[/STRIKE] if you count clearing off my computer desk of miscellaneous computery bits that somehow managed to end up there. More will follow

According to pregnology.com, I have been pregnant for 200 days. That's a lot of days.

Nozza, my sympathies... I'm 41+1 today (eek!) so I know what its like waiting... I had a microwave steriliser with my daughter that could also be used for cold water sterilising if I wanted, it worked for me so I've gone for the same again, a tommee tippee one.. I also have tommee tippee bottles, and the breast pump that match, mostly because they were cheap at an asda baby event...

If you do plan to breastfeed but are worried about the medication you have to take for your epilepsy then check out the breastfeeding networks drugline, there's a lovely lady called Wendy that runs it who knows just about all there is to know about medication and breast milk...

Hope things kick off for you soon :)

1- Can anyone recommend cheap but effective sterilisation product- i notice some are for the microwave and others are electric- I just dont kjnow which would be best? We bought a microwave one - tommee tippy closer to nature as I liked the bottles - make sure what you buy will fit the bottles you want to use.

2- What type of feeding bottles are best- ie ones that reduce wind build up for the baby? Good question... :) I have the tommee ones but no idea what they're really like as Roo is only 3 days old :)

3 - Breastfeeding- up until now, i have just been worried about the delivery, now I realise i need to think post delivery- and am not sure whether to breastfeed or not- anyway, I was wondering if anyone could recommend a manual breast pump or are they pretty much alike?
BF :D yes your nipples get sore, yes you worry you're doing it right, but when that little jaw goes up and down and they look up at you and you know that no-one else will ever get that look from her it's all worth it!
Pumps... we have a manual one and it will probably never get used... instead we were recommended the Medela electric one - you can use it either on mains or with batteries - perfect for us :) And loads of the MWs at the hospital have used it themselves which seemed a good start ;)

have tried to answer a few bits for you :) sorry can't type easily as Roo is on my lap lol

    Hi Nozza,

Not really got much advice as this is my first, and you are way further on than me. I doubt that there is a best product when it comes to sterilising, it's just what suits your circumstances. We have bought a microwave one.
For bottles, I would imagine that the anti-colic bottles are the type to buy for wind reduction, maybe Tommy Tippee Closer To Nature?

Well done on getting so far. It's good to hear that the hospital are looking after you, and I am sure everything will go smoothly. Try not to worry!

Tine, your nipples shouldn't be sore... Hope you got plenty of help with positioning in hospital :)

Get yourself to ASDA and see if they have anything left over from baby event

I got the TT CTN electronic steriliser for £12.50 and the TT CTN breast pump for £5. Got 3 TT bottle with these and they say they mimic the nipple.
Please give it a go - at least you can say you tried. Was going to say wait for krystal but she's on already!

Krystal - someone said to me the other day - 'stick with the BF, it hurts like hell but is worth it in the end!' please tell me they were doing it wrong!! :o

    They were doing it wrong!

Sometimes, at the beginning especially you can get sore nipples if your positioning is not optimum... It more likely at the beginning because it's a skill you have to learn, you need to learn how to position the baby, the baby needs to learn how to get on there properly to make it work... One of the worst things newborns do is only take a little bit of nipple into their mouth and then suck the rest in... This results in a 10 second toe curler at the start of a feed, but then because the nipple is then in the best position the rest of the feed continues pretty painlessly... A lot of women carry this on because they think it's ok... If you start the feed making sure baby has a big wide open mouth and takes as much nipple in to start with, then the 10 second toe curler can be avoided. ;)
