Has anyone else had a problem with the whole fresh chickens?

I tried to claim r&r today in 2 stores on these today.
Store 1: Selected 3 chickens, all above the weight range specified on SEL for medium chickens - i.e. all above 1.7kg, where weight range is listed as 1.xxkg up to 1.69kg. All priced at the medium rate of £2.20 kg.

Large chickens are listed on SEL as being between the weights of 1.65 and 1.99kg, and priced at £2.10 kg.

My argument was that the chickens I had selected should have been packaged as large, and therefore priced at £2.10 kg - so I had been overcharged. The manager refused r&r, insisting that the weight ranges on SELS were guidelines only. Tried arguing, and told him that I felt his reasoning was flawed, but in the end just took a refund and left without the chicken. (Did successfully receive r&r on other items though).

Store 2: Again, selected a chicken over 1.7kg but marked and weighed as medium. Woman on CS asked 3 different staff members for their opinions, but got so fed up with their conflicting advice that she r&r'd just to be done with it.
some people grin and bear it, others smile and do it :)

One of your trump cards is the threat of going to the local press - most local rag editors will be interested in a story of about a large local supermarket that makes £2.2bn profit willfully ripping off their readers.

And, beleive me, around the times that Tesco announces such massive profits, the press will be keen to publish any story that sensationalises the whole thing.

You might have a fight, but I fully expect that you'll win.

Absolutely right. If you don't have any joy with HO, ring Chris the Editor of the Leyland Guardian, they will be probably be very happy to feature you in their consumer section

    Hi

    Tesco Leyland
I was seen to by Service Manager :: Name removed - FM :: and I said to her "Hi, I've bought these items and they are all more expensive than the shelf label".
She said, "I'll stop you there. I can refund the difference or you can return the whole lot and thats all I'm gonna do". She said this with a rude little sarcastic grin plastered on her face.
Yup thats the way she works, she will intimidate you, tell you lies about how the item isnt the same item the price refers to, and basically tell you there is nothing you can do about it. She probably "wins" most cases by doing that and by you accepting the refund, she has probably won this as you no longer have the items and the evidence ... but HO is your best bet to try now.

I will say if anyone goes into Leyland, stand firm, and be prepared to be there a long time (45 mins for me at the desk) and if you really are positive eventually she has to bring out a real manager who of course will know you have been overcharged and tell her to give the refund, its all a big act as she is as aware of whats going on as you are :)

    Hi

She refused to budge on her stance and then said "Look there is a queue of people behind you, what do you want, a refund of the difference, or to return all items for a full refund?"

I elected for a full refunded and left the shop after taking her details.

    What should I do now?[/QUOTE

In my experience its a complete waste of time ringing head office as they always side with the store , full of apologies of course , so don't bother . Just go to another store if possible !

This is not my experience at all. However, you need to stand firm in the face of adversity. HO carries plenty of weight with the stores and I had a three week stand off with one store and HO and eventually I simply told them that unless they followed their well publicised policy, I would take the matter to the press.

    I had a £60 refund authorised in 15 minutes.

reading back on some people's experiences, i think i was very lucky today and have some of the best tesco staff around who actually follow their store policies albeit unhappily for a couple. i bought 5 psp games and 1 cd, all scanned at a higher price than the front cover sticker so took it to CS and said that i've been overcharged. she wasn't sure what to do so asked her colleague whom i know to be very moody overall and will try to squirm out of a full r&r. i knew she knew what my plan was and she whispered to CS1 that i should get a full refund but ask first if i'll accept a refund of the difference. i pointed out their policy and she innocently went 'oh yes, that's right...' so off they went to check the products, with CS2 explaining to CS1 how people abuse the policy, etc. when they came back, CS1 busily scanned everything while CS2 was on the phone to probably the manager and explaining the situation. i picked up on the words, 'she obviously...' so she knew my game and then finally quoted the total of my r&r but no hassle compared to others and tried to keep a straight face as i took away the pile of games. think i'll be keeping my head low from now on though...

I have had to call HO twice, the first was with Miss Peters in Leyland around a month back, at the point I phoned i had items still in my possesion that were overcharged, and I was refusing her kind offer of getting the diference back, or a refund but they keep the goods, and then her second kind offer of a refund on 2 items only as they had a bulk buy policy of no more than 2 items in the store .... HO has to speak to her and then after that it became a different story and she had to refund the full amount and I got to keep my meat. The second time was Warrington Extra this week, after they had a chance to speak to the store and called me back 30 mins later, they said i could go and get my full refund from the store, again I think its because i refused to bow down to the manager who was insisting his word was final and I could have my 3 pence per item back ....

Its a case of are you positive the overcharge happened (not the wrong item or anything like that), will you be prepared to stand firm and not bow to the stalling or bully tactics that some stores might apply, and have you kept the good and receipt (your evidence) along with an admission that there was on overcharge but they just dont want to honour the policy. Saying that though, the vast majority of stores are probably fine, you tend to hear more about the ones that arent on here :)

Don't know if it's been mentioned but you can go up to a non-busy checkout and ask them to check the price for you, they can do this using a special 'price inquiry' function on their menu - although some cashiers do not know about this.. Just say thank you and walk off, if it's gonna get you an R&R, goto the end pay, then to the CSD.
