Tesco Misprices Discussion area part 5

OH an I had a bit of a bad experience at our local tesco last week. We bought two joints of beef that were mispriced and the mistake was over £2/kg overcharge. We were led a right song and dance by the duty manager there who basically denied that we were entitled to the RandR as he wasn't giving us free beef. He then took our beef away and repriced it at the lower price. Now considering it was our property at that point we found that rather amusing. After being kept waiting for over an hour at 7pm at night with baby and toddler in tow, we eventually 'encouraged' him into Rand R by refusing to budge unless he honoured the policy - he told us he did not agree with the policy and it took comments about ringing head office to 'encourage' him.
It was a bit of a nightmare in all and the most annoying thing was that my husband had to find him from the shopfloor twice as he kept disappearing to remove all items overpriced from sale, then to rearrange fixtures etc so he could avoid our RandR. I was furious about being treated so rudely, especially with the babies in tow (who ended up fractious and very later for bed).
I wondered whether I should call head office anyway and let them know?3 kids(DS1 6 Nov, DS2 8 Feb, DS3 24 Dec) a hubby and two cats - I love to save every penny I can!

ABSOLUTELY!
This kind of appalling service by Tesco staff is unforgiveable. Call HO and complain. Put in in writing and threaten to speak to the local press if you need to - but carry out the threat if you make it.
Had he taken my property back, I would have told him in no uncertain terms that I would telephone the Police.
With 2.2bn profits, some Tesco staff seems to beleive that their employer is untouchable. It's not.
Never lose sight of the fact that Tesco is breaking the law in cases like this. All we are doing is taking advantage of a published policy that Tesco decided to implement. They could stop all of this tomorrow by not making simple mistakes like this.

So, I let him follow me for a while and then I got narked about it and gave him the slip. Trotted off upstairs and stood on the mezzanine floor watching him try to find me again. I was in full view but it took him three or four minutes to notice me. So, as he came up the Travellator, I went back down in the lift and sure enough, he was on my tail again soon after.
That sounds like the Tesco Extra, Great Yarmouth. Am I right? In a rut? Can't get out? Don't know why?

"Who is the Poster?"
"Sarge? - No"
"Rosemary, the telephone operator? - No"
"Henry, the Mild Mannered Janitor - Could BE!!"
OK, so maybe we're not looking for Hong Kong Phooey here, but how the devil can you guess which store I am talking about?
Incidentally, there are plenty of stores with mezzanines and travelators now - I can name at least two others (Bletchley and Kingston MK).
You're not a Store Defective are you? If you are, I make no appology for suggesting that you improve your technique - you might as well have been shouting into that Walkie Talkie, "HE'S GOT SOME EDAM, THAT'S EDAM. I REPEAT EDAM", you'd have been less conspicious. :rotfl:0 -
Hi I'm after a bit of advice.
I was over charged on a whole leg of lamb sel £4.49 pkt £6.29 and Finest toprump joint SEL £7.29 reduced to £6.29. Pkt £7.29.
When the meat manager went to the aisle he said the SEL was for Scottish Beef and I had British until I pointed out there were two SEL and the second only said 'Finest top Rump'
When we looked at the Lamb she agreed I had been overcharged and pointed out the SEl to the manager and 2 assistants who were in the meat aisle.
The manager said thats not the correct SEL and I'm not refunding either. When I explained that there was only the 1 type of whole leg of lamb being sold in the shop and only the 1 sel for whole leg of lamb, she said it was for a cheaper cut? and if I wasn't happy I should take it up with head office and walked away.
I called from the store and spoke to c/s who then spoke to the manager. The upshot was the guy at head office said the manager had told him it was the wrong SEL and he had to abide by her rule.
I asked if he would authorise me photocopying the SEL of both items so I could prove I was overcharged. The manager again refused and said it was Tesco property. I was able to photo the label for the beef but the lamb sel had been removed. This discussion between myself, head office and the manager was with the manager in her office relaying her messages!
What do you think, if I telephone CS headoffice I'm only going to get the same response. I don't know whether to cut my losses since I've always had a refund in the past, the staff in this store are always polite and pleasant apart from this duty manager who is a dragon.Look after the pennies and the £££s will look after themselves0 -

Whilst i am not in a position to say wether the SEL's were right or wrong, my inclanation is that they probably were wrong and you were correct to request an R&R. That said, the variable weight products are often a bone of contention and when confronted with a duty manager such as the one described more often than not the customer is not onto a winner.
Any point in taking it further? Probably not...head office will generally back the stores decision, there is no way that they can make a store give the customers money back although they can do a refund in the form of a giftcard or clubcard points. Realistically it is entirely your decision.
One point, you have openly admitted that you have a photo that you were actually refused permission to take so if you go in with that tactic you may well be onto a loser.
You say about cutting losses when actually you dont have any....you have the product, and you paid the price that was advertised on the product, and i am sure that you would have bought it wether the SEL differed from the price on the product or not.;)Fight Poverty - Hit a tramp!
I don't exist, it is merely your imagination.

It was the guy at CS headoffice when we were going round in circles that I asked if he would authorise the store to take a photocopy of the SEL so that I could send them up to head office along with my product labels. He actually said that was ok to the girl at cs who went and got the 2 for the beef. It was only while we were waiting to find out where the manager had put the lamb label that the instruction came down from her not to give me any photocopies. I've since had a call from head office to tell me that since our conversation in the store the store manager has overruled him and therefore I couldn't have a copy(which I already knew since the manager had sent down an assistant). I must admit I always thought that head office gave the orders and the store managers followed them, not the other way round.
I must admit I found the whole thing amusing as well as annoying. What's the saying? lose the battle but win the war.Look after the pennies and the £££s will look after themselves0 -
You know those aisle end promos - big yellow SELs announcing SPECIAL PRICE with the old price/kg crossed through and new lower price advertised instead? If you find some meat there at the old higher price - beware - Tesco have a trick up their sleeves!
Recently I found a couple of beef large topside joints - still 6.86/kg in such a promo area advertised as 'now 4.86/kg'.
Went to get my RnR. No joy --- along the main aisle the CS pointed out the IDENTICAL product where all the joints residing there were at the higher 6.86/kg price! CS commented: " I suppose other customers must have exchanged their original joints for the ones on promo when they found them cheaper at the aisle end" . CS told me that they only get an allocated qouta of so many eg joints at the SPECIAL PRICE - the rest are on sale concommitantly at the higher price!!
This is an interesting marketing tactic. Is it legal for Tesco to do this?
There was no sign by the higher priced joints:
"oh by the way dear customer if you can be bothered to walk a few yards you can buy this one third cheaper at the end of this aisle. Every little helps"0 -
I wrote a huge letter of complains to Tesco about this, it's not legal to discount only a certain % of stock as it then means you have to have 2 SEL's. What has to be done is discount all stock for a time period until the desired % has been met then end the offer. But Tesco, law unto themselves.
I too had exactly the same product with the topside rump and one of their arguments was that one packet didn't contain the work "joint". Honestly, how sad :rolleyes:0
