How much do you feed your cat?

I've been lurking on this site for months and months, learning some really interesting stuff but Cattie's posts drove me to register so I can vent about her friend's disgraceful cruelty and neglect. Does this bint not realise that a KILO of complete dried cat-food costs less than a pound in Lidl? That's enough food to keep a couple of darling indoor pusscats for nearly a couple of weeks. I'd report her to the RSPCA, she's not worthy to be keeping company with felines.
Rant over: I feed my little boy Stanley complete dried food on demand. He's offered only one pouch of wet food in the evenings as he only ever licks the gravy off the "chunks". Because I'm a sly-boots I also mix it up with some hot water to raise the temp to blood-heat and to encourage him to drink more. I also have several water-bowls for him around the place for the same reason: cats rarely drink where they eat so one next to the food-bowl is often pointless.0 -
My cat is fed dried cat food on demand with the occasional small tin of wet food. She does have a water bowl next to her food bowl and does drink from it, but also prefers to drink the dogs water!
I have to say, she is in excellent condition with a shiny, glossy coat, bright eyes and clean teeth.0 -
My two get about a tin (400g) and a half between them of meaty goodness in 3 meals a day and free access to biscuits in the mean time. Got 2 cats at about 11 and 14yrs and they like it regular in small portions. This amount may reduce since I started squashing the lumps in their wet food, previously Sherlock seemed to dispense half of it on the lino then demand fresh
All that said, Sherl is a big cat at about 5 - 6kg and Newt is around 4 - 4.5kg. Neither look fat, can feel both spines and ribs but not see them.
They get seperate bowls but I reckon Sherl eats 3/4 meat and Newt 3/4 biscuits. Each to their own.
They get to 'lick the bowl' with human food but never when it's really sweet or salty. Mostly scrambled egg, mayo or soup
Getting on a bit but know when they've been fed, so their wierdness isn't altzheimers anyway.

I'v got a Six Dinner Sid type of cat so he is fed wet food twice daily with dried cat food down all the time for grazing.
I would starve myself rather than the cat.
However I did once say to a previous cat I had that if they didn't like what was in their bowl then they could go and get their own dinner. They promptly disappeared through the cat flap and returned with a live shrew!Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)0 -

Thats what I thought.
I choose to feed my cats expensive dried food, but their is plenty of cheap stuff & if she can't or won't buy enough food, then she shouldn't have a pet.
PLEASE report her or remove the animal OP.0 -
Unfortunately the RSPCA do not seem interested at a cat being left for a day or 2 here & there without food.
Responses they portray on tv don't actually happen an awful lot in real life I fear.
It seems an animal has to be in a really bad condition or situation before they respond with help. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -

I bet this person doesn't go without food herself when she says she can't afford to feed her cats, poor little things! Worst of it is that they are not getting the opportunity to re-home themselves, which I'm sure they would do if they had access to the outdoors - I would!
I fear for their water supply, do they often find a dry bowl? Heartless and unnecessary.
As B&T mentioned earlier, Lidl dried food is very inexpensive and seems to be a pretty decent food too! Because they love it, Lidl's is on the "treat" list for mine as a change from Royal Canine and JWB.
I feed a pouch each or a can between 1 large & 2 small cats, twice a day, plus they always have a bowl of dried complete food available beside their water fountain. Mine are getting chunky so I'm trying to cut them down, but I am meeting some very serious opposition! :rotfl:
If Daisy walks into the kitchen and wet food bowls are empty, or worse, no bowls down at all, she makes her views known by "collapsing" in the middle of the kitchen floor, watching me all the while to make sure I realise I'm starving her to death (10 minutes after she personally emptied all the bowls!). If I take one single step towards the cat food store she has a miracle recovery. She applies this "Daisy falls down dead" tactic to anything she doesn't like, little madam! :rolleyes:My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead

I used to feed my cat once a day, a full tin of cat food, which he never ate in one sitting so he could always go back for more.
I always wanted to give him a constant supply of dry food but he was so greedy he'd wolf it down too fast and promptly throw it back up!
Anyway, now that i have 2 cats we buy the 15kg bags of Go Cat Complete from the local garden centre (£10) - the last one lasted us for over 4 months. We also buy the cheap wet food and give them that mixed with their dry about 3 times a week.
However they do not have the dry food all day as the dog would eat it so we fill their bowls a couple of times a day when pup is locked away(Not that pup would dare sniff it if tomcat was within a 15 metre radius:rotfl:)
Now that i've moved over to dry food (and the first cat has learned not to inhale it instead of eat it) i am saving a small fortune in feeding the cats.0 -
To your question, I free feed mind Royal Canin, as much as they want, bowl never allowed to run empty. DH says I feed to much, they are not fat they are big boned;)
My OH used to do that with Royal Canin Indoor as soon as my back was turned because I warned him not to and both of our cats ended up completely blocked with crystals because they weren't drinking enough water to compensate for all of the dry food. One of them so badly that the vet told the OH that if he hadn't taken him to the vet when he did, the cat was within hours of having his bladder explode.
Now they get 200g of wet food each per day and OH has learned his lessonIt's not easy having a good time. Even smiling makes my face ache.0
