I have an old cottage and the multi fuel burner (Steve as he is known) is 5kW. It heats my whole house with just an oil fired radiator now and again upstairs. It is toast! I only have a small cottage though. I burn it full pelt in the winter though and it does take lots of wood at weekends and a fair chunk of coal (for the pedantic, some coal stuff :-)) to keep it in over night.

Is the following a good deal? Charnwood country 6 woodburner, £650 at firesonline. Charnwood are highly rated on here it seems and with the free pipe, register board and delivery its the cheapest ive seen, half the price of its clearview rival. If not, can anyone recommend a better current deal on a 6-8kw stove? Thanks
  • I'm looking at a Stovax stove, medium sized as have quite a large room (approx 40m2) and house to heat. Have oil central heating aswell and not looking to replace that.

But I have no chimney so have to have a flue installed....for which the fitter has estimated at £4k. Is this right?

This doesn't include the cost of the stove and I'm struggling to find any proces online for any Stovax stoves. This is the one the fitter and local chimney sweep sells and recommends.

    Any help/advice appreciated!

You really do need to get several quotes for installation - they can vary widely.

    Hope that helps.

Stovax has a pretty good reputation and its products are online. You could do worse than start by looking at www.stovesonline.co.uk There are other online retailers, too.
  • Stovax have a good reputation but there's better stoves around for not much more money......Dunsley, Charnwood, Franco Belge to name a few.

4K seems pretty pricey to install a twin wall flue but without any detail of the job in question i can't say whether it's a crazy price or not. A standard 2 storey house is usually around £2000 inc vat......plus extras such as boxing in the flue on upper floors....etc.

As CR says, that type of freestanding installation is very expensive. The materials are dreadfully costly and there is a lot of further work required due to the safety aspect of a flue passing through your house and being supported outside. Get a couple more quotes.
  • It can get expensive if a constructional hearth is required or the rear wall needs fireproofing or a false chimney breast is to be built. Just bear in mind that the expense of the things above can be wavered buy selecting a stove with good clearances to combustibles and one that doesn't exceed the 100 degrees hearth temperature. These are usually Scandinavian stoves as they're used to putting wood burners in timber buildings.

Check out the Lotus range of stoves or the Nordpeis Smarty or the Morso range of stoves. These all have good clearances from combustibles.
  • You may want to check if you live in a smoke control area, where you will need a DEFRA approved Cleanburn Stove - check out Stovax's website, they have loads
  • Come on mate.....stop pushing Stovax....be a bit more subtle about it. Anyone would think your a Stovax dealer:-)
