    No.

On every train/tube/bus in the country there are seats specifically highlighted and marked for the people with poor mobility and medical needs. I have never been consciously aware of a situation where the need for those seats out numbered the designated seats.

I don't sit in those seats unless they are the last available seats. If I am sitting in one of those seats I will not only volunteer my seat, I will actively look out for people who may require them, that includes pregnant ladies. If I am not sitting in one of those seats, then I am unlikely to volunteer my seat.

I would give up my seat for definite, I'm young and would rather she sat down than feel guilty for leaving her standing in discomfort. Whatever her circumstances who's to say she paid less than I did- it doesn't cost much more to book your seat on the trains I travel on and I would probably have paid less having booked in advance.

  • Once a pregnant woman is 20 weeks pregnant, she is entitled to a free upgrade to first class on presentation of her MATb! form (the form you give to your employer, which ytou can get from your midwife)

I commuted throughout both of my pregnancies and never had a problem obtaining a nice first class seat!
  • I think some people in this thread have forgotten that if us women didn't CHOOSE to get pregnant then there'd be no human race.
I'd give up my seat in an instant, and have actually given up my seat for an elderly lady when heavily pregnant(and no,she didn't say thank you).
I have also had a young man, with children, ask me to get up from the stool in the clothing area in Asda so he could try some shoes on. I was 8 and a half months pregnant at the time.
His wife tutted in disgust, said 'I can't believe you've just done that!' and walked away from him.

I've got a disabled sister in a wheelchair and I've got 3 children so I've seen this from both sides. Some people are just so ignorant and selfish.

I would absolutely give up my seat for a pregnant lady or elderly/disabled person and I am shocked at some of the responses on this thread. Maybe the lady in question could not book a seat as she was travelling at short notice. Whatever, I could not sit and watch her stand. We should all start being a bit nicer to others - one day we may benefit ourselves!
  • Yes I would give up my seat....and then ask her to pay me £50.......:rotfl:

I can't help wondering just how many of the "wouldn't give up my seat" 's are men who have never nor will never experience pregnancy...? Mums, you'll understand what I mean!

It's horrible to think that so many people put so much more onus on the money they spent on the seat rather than having a bit of humanity or kindness. Doesn't anyone have a conscience anymore?

    On the tube - yes
    On a bus - yes
On a train where i have not reserved a seat, just managed to grab one - short journey yes, longer maybe.
On an train where i did reserve a seat - no, unless she was clearly very ill and uncomfortable

Now, i'm a woman, and i know a lot of my friends are shocked (and amused!) by my views on pregancy - it was her choice to become pregnant, and she has to take responsiblity for it. I think it is entirely fair that part of that responsiblity involves thinking about how she is going to travel, whether that is pre-booking a seat, or finding a guard or other to point out the carriages with unreserved seats etc.

I presonally don't find it fair or reasonable to discomfort myself for a choice someone else has made, unless they are clearly in difficulty - in which case it is then my choice whether to help them out or not (and i usually would)

I think this covers how I feel on it, I regularly give up seats on buses and short train journeys but I do have a limit. I would gladly point out a guard or ticket collector who would be able to find her a seat on a long journey and help her that way, but if I've booked a seat I have done so because I know my back and leg problems will be aggravated by standing for that particular journey.

There have been times where I've been in such straits that I have had to sit in a tiny space on the floor being glared at and it has made me more aware of my own limits. Of course the outside world just sees a 22 year old woman who is 100% healthy (In truth I am falling apart! :D).

However if it came about that she couldn't get a single seat at all (Though I'd think a guard would scare up a seat if they are heavily pregnant - or perhaps she would even be lucky enough to be upgraded) I would offer to share my seat with her, perhaps 30-60 minute intervals. That way we'd both get some rest and I wouldn't cause myself a ridiculous amount of pain.

Now those who hate those of us that can't give up our seat I won't apologise for the fact that I can't do what you can . For me it is can't not won't so I don't see this as me being a bad person, I would at least try my best to help, not pretend I haven't seen them or look the other way.
