The OP said it was a 'whoopsie' cake, only 30p! surely we're all allowed a little indulgence, skint or no!

Sorry the episode doesn't seem to ring true, until the transaction is signed, then there is no funds deducted........

All true, I have had this happen to me. The banks hold the funds in a suspense-type account until a transaction is cleared one way or the other which can take up to 3 days.

Perhaps the card company saw 2 withdrawal attempts and temporarly blocked the card.......

Nope, if the funds are "allocated" already & this uses up available funds then they will not validate a further transaction if there is not enough cash in the account.

At the risk of being shot down in flames (I'm just playing devil's avocado;)) if you're that skint why are you buying cakes???

That patronising question doesn't deserve an answer from the OP.

If you're that skint, perhaps the only comfort you can afford is a cut-price cake?

Ok, I'm going to confess, if I had £17 budget and I could buy a whoopsie cake for 30p and still have change for another day - - - - - - I'd get the cake, eat a slice and freeze the rest for another time :rotfl:

Besides, on a budget of £17, what other small "treat" could you get? You certainly can't make a cake for 30 pence. Won't even buy you a Mars Bar.

At less than 2% of the total budget, it's not really a major point ;)

I have had similar happen to me once when Tesco somehow debited my card twice. With the Halifax your transactions and available balance don't balance if there are items in 'limbo'. I rang up telephone banking and they told me that there was an item on hold. If I remember correctly they couldn't see who was holding it, but it was for longer than a couple of days, I think I rang Tesco (because it was the same amount as my Tesco debit, and they cancelled it, quite some time ago now). Some companies will do it to check your card is legit if you order somehting big they will put through a £1. I beleived that the bank would let them old it for quite a while.

Also: if you're skint, buying 30p items sounds not a bad idea at all to me.
    I'd certainly go for it.

It's not like the OP bought a £15 black forest tart, is it?

Have a nice day and may it rain on your life at some point so that you can finally see the other person's point of view!

I've been pre-charged many a time on my cards (some time for hundreds if not a thousand), bit of a pain but I just use another account, its forward planning. I never keep all my cards together, take a note of the numbers to call in case they are lost/stolen and keep records of other important documents.

I understand your view, but think not what ASDA can do for you, but what you can do for yourself. Stuff happens, most of the time it's not your fault but you'll need a way to deal with it.

May sunshine brighten up your life in the future.

arrowsmith - you are fortunate that you have other accounts with funds - at this moment in time I do not. Circumstances change and thank goodness mine changed for the better this morning with the DWP finally sorting a claim out and giving me a back payment for a claim dating back to January. At last I can come off the very very very skint breadline and move up to the cake once a week line! But you still do need to start thinking from the other person's point of view IMHO - there was nothing else I could do for myself - my finances are no one's concern but mine and I don't intend to vindicate myself on here. I've been subsisting for 6 months thanks to circumstances totally outside of my control and have gone from being quite well off and comfortable to an extreme that would shock a lot of people, but I have surivived by using my wits and never going into overdraft/using credit cards etc etc. If there was no cash, there was no purchase.
BTW the monies are still NOT back on my debit card as at lunchtime today.
The whole point here is that I HAVE been doing what I can for myself - hunting out the very best bargains to make my money go as far as I can - what Asda should have done for me (and failed to do) was offer the best of customer service.
