Good to see the community working!
Shame you don't see more of it in neighborhoods. But I also think things like this M&S promotion encourages it. When people feel that they get a fair deal they often feel less defensive and more generous. I know that 1/2 the freebies I get goes to my friends and family.
Anyway, keep up the good work and be nice to M&S............... Have you ever wondered what

Some people seem to have got the wrong idea that this was somehow going to be a fire sale. It was always about a birthday celebration and the goods on sale were commemorative items to mark the occasion. It was a bit of fun and a chance to make a bit for charity.
Can't understand all the bickering...and to accuse someone of fraud for selling an item on Ebay is OTT if not downright libellous.
You're so right. I wonder how many people only put 5p in the bucket?? For the staff, it was mostly about raising money for our designated local charity (pain relief machine in a hospice) and lots of people in our store gave their 5p and went  They'll probably need to use that hospice one day !!

I've been to 3 stores and they'd all sold out. I read in the paper that people are queing from 5am. Is it really worth it for that? I don't think so, but I'd be there if it were for flat screen TV's !! It's a great marketing exercise for M&S though. Good ole Mr Rose.0

I am sorry but what kind of people get up at 5 am to queue to spend 5p on tat
You can give to charity anytime you like you know - it doesn't have to be through an M & S promotion.0 -

Here's my haul from this morning from M&S in Eltham.......
Tie, Passport holder, teatowel, cufflinks and mug.
It was a VERY relaxed queue, I got there about 7:20 and there were only three people in front of me.
The security guard popped out occasionally to check everything was in order but he needn't have bothered as everyone was well behaved.
The few people queuing in front of me let a few of their family in but as the queue was only about 30 people when we went in I don't think anyone was particularly bothered.
The manager came out a few times and was handing out battenburg cake, which I declined as it was a little too early for that! No tea or coffee but did get the peel and reveal ticket (12.5% off over £35 purchase) and I did enquire if anyone had won the £12,500 and apparently there have been a few winners.
The shop opened at 8:30, which was a nice surprise as I was expecting it to be 9:00, and we filed in alongside the 'regular' shoppers. Once inside we went to another roped off area and chose our items while the shop assistants, dressed in period costume, put them into a commemorative plastic bag. Once done you went around and put a donation in the bucket. All in all it took five minutes (but then I was fourth in the queue!).
When I left there were people joining the queue but there can't have been more than around 30 people at any one time.
A pretty good morning and I thanked the manager as I left for the good organisation.
NOTE: I didn't see any evidence of the first person there getting any 'one item up to £50 for 1p' so I'm not sure where that's coming from.
They are running a few other promotions in store:
30% off clocks
Glass packs 30% off
Single glasses from 50p
2 pillows for £3.80
Up to 30% off furniture
20% off homeware
I spotted my Dad later on in the queue and went over and said 'I knew you couldn't resist', and he said 'I only came over to buy some Yorkshire puds'! LOL! I had to explain to him that he could go in the regular entrance without having to queue for them! Bless him! He did, however, get a peel and reveal ticket (12.5% off, same as me) so he's chuffed with that.Life's what you make it....

I was lucky enough to be 1st through the door of the Belfast branch today. I got a £50 spend in store for 1p. I picked the most beautiful brown leather bag from the autograph range.
I was then treated to breakfast in the restaurant.
It really was a lovely surprise, well worth getting up early for, as i never ever see myself spending £50 on a handbag.
What a lovely way to start the weekend.
Have always loved M&S, even worked for them many years ago.
Hope they raise lots of money for their charities.0 -
I was first through my local store today.and didnt get offered a thing. I thought this was only for the first day.
Have just rung M&S as was first person at my store today and they confirm this is NOT taking place. First person in queue not getting offered aup to £50 item for 1p.Dont know where posters are getting this from but M&S customer sertvices adamant on phone to me this is NOT taking place today or yesterday.
Our Manager was not present at our store today. Met him while queuing yesterday. But nothing special was offered to anyone first in the queue on either day.
EDIT further to this and also having spoken to Head Office have just rang a few managers of stores where it is quoted on here as taking place and they have all confirmed to me that these were given in amounts of at least 3 special vouchers up to £50 item for 1p for each store taking place in Penny Bazaar to by handed by Manager to first person in queue each day and also if given any extra to grant at discretion. Our Manager was not there today. So phoned our store and queried this with them. Ticket was given out to someone but NOT first person in queue. Problem being I was quite clearly first person in q, there at 6.50 am ,seen by staff, cleaners, window cleaners, security had to walk past me to get in, had photo taken by one staff member as first person in the queue, was up against the door when doors were opened and actually welcomed and ushered into building by senior staff member who had an exchange with me about my being first and not wanting to burst in but wait to be invited to enter store.
On a brighter note I have a voucher for 12.5 per cent off if anyone can use it.What Would Bill Buchanan Do?0 -

The queue was quite long but the whole thing was calm and well organised.
I managed to get a jewellery set, knickers, mug, drink, tea towel
Unfortunately the purses, ties and socks were gone by the time i got in.
I didn't feel right putting just 5p in the bucket so i made extra donation aswell just to give me a better consience.
Well done M&S0
