I got in the que at 8:50 and I was number 78. People had been queing since 8am. When I got in the shop there were no purses, passport holders, scarfs or cufflinks left. I got a

leather name tag for a suitcase
a tea towel - well they actually gave me two
    jewellery
    a beachball (for my son)
    a tie

not decided whether to go back tomorrow or not.
  • Have just come from the M&S 1p sale~ well organised and friendly ~ I queued from 8.10 and was 7th in line ~ got all I wanted for 5p ~ plus 2 free peppermint creams for the kids ~ will be back tommorow ~ have also shared details with my online freecycle/money saving community ~ so i guess I'll need to be there at 7.30ish now!

    Been twice and got:
2x mugs (good size as 3/4 size of normal mugs, good for a small cuppa)
    2x tea towels (good gifts)
    2x socks (good quality)
    1x broach for my gran
1x spare set of cuff links
    1x frisbee (for the dog)
1x tie (usually go for silk, but will be a good back up)

The way I see it is that essentially M&S are giving away things (note - you get a decent bag which costs 10 or something as well) for products (maybe not all up to not M&S standard, but decent quality all the same - the socks seem very good).

All donations go to the charities specific to the stores - which for Warrington Town is MacMillian, which I was told is a cause celeb there.

    My complaints are:
    1) anyone who complains about the quality....
ITS FREE! if you don't want it, don't take it. Plus its in no way "bad quality", i guess just some is not top M&S quality.

    2) Complain about the queues
M&S are not making you queue - its the fact that other people want the items is the reason why you are queuing.

    3) People who give only 5p for 5 items (plus bag) when they can afford much more - c'mon.
If you cant put a bit of the loose change extra then maybe you should look at things in context. The donations are nothing to do with M&S - and if you think its ok the give just 5p its seems to say a little more about you that M&S!
I am unemployed at the moment and gave a couple of pounds, and the staff were really pleased I'd made the effort. Its sad to think its not the norm. And I am not having a go at the kids, the single parents, etc who can't afford it - it is those that can afford much more.

Thanks to M&S and Good luck to the charities

I don't understand the grumbles about queuing, the quality of the goods etc

It's a promo by M&S to get customers through their doors and to raise money for local charities. Surely it's just the experience that matters, getting chatting in the queue to people you've never met before, just a bit of fun with some freebies thrown in for the price of a donation to charity.
Sounds good to me and I'm enjoying reading about people's experiences :)
  • Nice atmosphere at the chelmsford store today. think they had opened at 8.30 today. there was a few things gone by the time i got to the bit but i didnt mind, because what i got was pretty much what i wanted. i got teatowel, lovely mug, frisbee, coconut mushrooms(sweets) and a brooch (which will be perfect for a top i'm customising at the mo.

chilled out queue, staff allreally friendly, i got a few sweeties while waiting in the queue. Might return tomor so i can get a wee goodie bag for my mum. i feel a bit sorry for her, cos she's currently a bit ill and waiting on an op to make her feel better, and she has to pack boxes at home cos shes away to move house. i cant even help her cos im in essex and she lives in scotland:( maybe some bits from m+s will cheer her up :)

having spoken to a couple of M&S employees last night after the first day of this, i am disgusted with what i heard. People were going into the store, asking for leather suites for a penny, swearing at staff when told that only certain items were 1p.

There were commemorative cups for 1p, but they were also on sale further in the store for approx £5, bearing in mind all the proceeds from this event are going to charity, people were fighting over the £5 mugs and leaving 4/5p on the counter adn walking off.

Apparently some people were paying £20 for the items, more than happy to pay far more than eveyone else for the items, but as always theres always a group of !!!!!!!s who spoil it for everyone.

Heard how one woman went in with a newborn baby, asked for the max number of items (5 per customer?) and then demanded 5 more for the baby; when questioned how the baby is a customer and is able to pay, she swore at staff again.

Some people think its a free for all, unbeleivable how they think couches and clothing are going to be 1p, then kicking off at staff when they cant have a pair of £40 shoes for 1p cos they have come from another town to get htem.

The Liverpool Central store was very well organised today. Not that many queueing at 08.35, perhaps due to torrential rain?! The staff opened up a bit early to try to get as many people out of the rain as possible. Very happy with my scarf, brooch, pants, tea towel and purse and I was away by 09.05. By that time the queue was much longer so I don't think it would be worth going in later today. Money is going to the Rhys Jones appeal.

oooo I was at this one too, Done by the same time. Got a gorgeous necklace set, passport holder, scarf, underwear and a tea towel, was a little bit gutted tho as I wanted to use the jewellary set for my Bridesmaid for my wedding (cheapskate I know ) so I asked my sister to come with me and she misunderstood and thought I was getting 2 so never bothered  lol so we went and did a bit more shopping and then on the way back saw there was no queue so she went in again but they had gotten rid of most things. never mind tho but I was very impressed with the staff for how quick and efficient they all were
  • With regards to the Chelmsford store comment, my mum was down there yesterday, and they gave her a £50 voucher as she was first in the queue ! She managed to get herself a nice dress (£49.50) for 1p !

She did mention that it was all very friendly there and no problems at all.

I can quite believe that the minority spoil it for the majority in many places though - shame really.
