Threatened to leave our old provider that were offering us a fairly poor deal and managed to haggle two shiny new phones and decent contracts all for £15 less than we are paying right now!!!Debt at worst: £33000 (Feb 2011). Present debt: £25610 (Apr 2012)

However when I changed my job I was given a company mobile and am permitted to use it for personal calls. This means I don't really need my own mobile on a contract for making calls.
However, I do need my personal mobile for INCOMING calls and a very small amount of outgoing (less than 50 mins per month).
Keeping my number is important to me so I'm a bit concerned about going "Pay As You Go" in case I neglect to top up, or even if I have to top up £10 a month I can get a contract for less.
Are there any options around really low usage contracts?
I would suggest the giffgaff Hockey Cockey tariff (PAYG).
Otherwise, check available contracts in uswitch, they stary from £7. Last but not least,Virgin has a £5 tariff for Virgin Media customers.

I fully intended to cancel my 24 month contract with Vodafone and go PAYG so I laughed when a chavvy girl rang me up from a call centre demanding that I tell her why I wouldn't want a new phone ('wat, ya dont wanna new fone? why wuddancha wanna new fone?') and then hung up on me when I told her I didn't care about a new phone I'd rather have extra money in my bank.
I called up soon after to tell them I was planning on going PAYG and then the calls from customer retentions started.
I ignored the first five or six and the text message telling me they'd be in contact soon to tell me what steps I 'needed to take next'.
Eventually I answered just to stop the calls and politely explained that I barely touched my 300 mins, 300 texts and all I really used was the 500mb data on my phone. I told them I was happy to put £10 a month on my mobile and that it would be plenty for me.
The vodafone person then offered me (as a long term loyal customer who has never missed or been late a payment of course) a special tariff of 600mins, 300 texts and 500mb of data for £10.25 a month under a 12 month contract.
I accepted. Instantly the next bill I got which arrived a couple of days after this call for the previous month was already at this new rater even though I still had two months left on my contract.
I think I nailed an absolute bargain here and could not be happier with the tariff, price and short contract. Not to mention (other than the chavvy girl cold call) excellent, non-pushy customer service from all when I rang Vodafone.
Very satisfied as I didn't even intend on bargaining, I was just offered this rate straight out.
Just to add this was sim only and my previous tariff cost me £30 per month.0 -
I have to say that your sim-only £30 for 300+300+500 was a daylight robbery. 300+1000+500 cost just £8 at talkmobile that use the same network.
That said, 600+300+500 for £10.25 is a reasonably good deal, but not an absolute bargain IMO. Tesco mobile routinely offer 500+5000+500 for £10.0 -
That's provided it really IS on the 12 month contract AND at that rate throughout. Vodafone are well known for setting up deals entirely different to those promised over the phone.0

I rang them up afterwards and asked what my contract payments were to check that what he'd told me was what he'd put on my account. And the previous contract wasn't sim only so I was paying off a smartphone with that one.
Also oops, I meant 3000 texts with this new tariff :-)
I live out in the country where Tesco mobile is notoriously poor for signal, but yes they do offer some great deals.
What I am saying is that considering all I was planning on doing was downgrading to £10 a month top ups on PAYG, for an extra 25p I'm pretty chuffed with that,0 -
My contract with O2 ends on the 16th. I spoke to retentions today and after a bit of bartering was offered a Galaxy Ace on a 24month contract with 50mins, 250 texts and 100MB data tethering when i said no they added 200 free mins and unlimited texts for £13.30 a month.
Is this the best i will get from O2.0 -
'Tethering' in this context makes no sense, but even ignoring this, 100Mb is a joke for a smartphone unless you use it mainly on wifi.0
