HSBC Maestro card with £250 cheque limit

I think the cheque guarantee function is just a form of buy now pay later i.e. it doesn’t hi your account until few days later, so if you are skint you can get stuff you need?
I don't think it's a "buy now, pay later" sort of thing. More like something that would benefit the retailer (guaranteeing that the cheque will be paid up to the amount shown on the card regardless of account balance). That's why banks normally only offer debit card with cheque guarantee to people who have access to agreed overdraft. I personally think the system is from the dinosaur age when people still use cheques at high street shops.0 -
I did read somewhere that HSBC were going to change from Maestro cards to VISA Debit cards in the UK.
This would be great! Maestro cards are useless outside of EU for purchases except cash withdrawal. They're also likely to change from Solo to Visa Electron should they switch their debit card system to Visa. This would be bad news for some Solo user as Electron is not as widely accepted in the UK (am not sure about this).0 -
where did you read that they were changing to VISA Debit cards?0

I don't know - I really hate the 'new' VISA logo personally - the Maestro one seems that much nicer

Hmm.. someone was complaining about it.
Ah here it is..
though I haven't seen it anywhere else yet....Apparently they don't like Maestro anymore and HBoS has dumped them in favour of Visa so all future debit cards issued by the bank will be Visa rather than MasterCard backed. And HSBC has also announced that it is to do the same,...

Lloyds TSB no longer issue cheque guarantee cards either. If however you are an existing customer with one, your card will generally always have at least the guarantee limit you currently have.0

HSBC dumping Maestro would leave NatWest alone in issuing Maestro/Solo. I doubt it would happen, tbh.
Really not too fond of Visa Debit, dunno why. Maybe it's because the red and blue Maestro logo is prettier, I dunno.
Funny this comes up on the day I got my new Maestro card through... bah.

I just don't believe that site that they will be leaving maestro. it really needs to be verified elsewhere.0

Does your card have a cheque guarantee logo?0 -
Nope, although that's understandable in my circumstances.0
