I have a FD £250 cheque guarantee card but they initially give you the £100 card.

why would you need a cheque guarantee card? Hardly anywhere still takes cheques as a form of payment, they're cumbersome,old fashioned and lets face it, the Maestro card does exactly the same job as a cheque anyway.

Some transactions with sole traders and the like eg my OH just bought £200 worth of printed T shirts for a club she helps with and they didn't take credit cards as they were pretty much a one man band (not that one man bands can't get set up for credit cards, I know).

Really? My debit card was renewed earlier this month and it has a £100 cheque guarantee facility. I'm curious about why some get the £250 but to be honest have little need for it (I can think, at most, of less than five cheques I've guaranteed since I've had the account in 1997!)

I think it's because you had the card before so they still issue one with the CG facility for you. From my personal observation, my friends who applied for student account from HSBC this year received Maestro Card without CG facility. I upgraded last September and got one with £100 CG. It's strange how HSBC do their business, lol.

My card got upgraded to £250 a few years back and im pretty sure i didnt even ask for it, im still on my first cheque book after nearly 10 years, lol

I think the cheque guarantee function is just a form of buy now pay later i.e. it doesn’t hi your account until few days later, so if you are skint you can get stuff you need?

Perhaps HSBC no longer issue cheque guarantee cards to all customers - as not all customers now have cheque books?

Certainly when my brother opened an account online with them some months ago a cheque book was offered but as 'an option', along with an overdraft and paper or electronic statements..

I did read somewhere that HSBC were going to change from Maestro cards to VISA Debit cards in the UK..
