I made some envelope cushions today out of a table cloth I bought in a charity shop for £1.95 and some ribbon I bought for 20p.
Any ideas of other beginners sewing projects?
How about a fabric carrier bag? details here: http://www.morsbags.com/
More ideas on this great site: http://sewing.about.com/od/freeprojects/tp/beginnerprojects.htm

Sounds great KT. I fancy doing something for fun rather than for someone specific or for my online shop. so I've cut out a little felt owl and I'm going to do a bit of freestyle embroidery on him, while I watch The Apprentice.:hello:

Just had to throw out an old jacket of DH it was so old and moth eaten plus he cant't get into it anymore - so I have cut off all the buttons and put them in my button box - ready for when I have finished knitting him a double breasted cardi and put the jacket in the recycling.
Buttons and material are so expensive now I try not to waste anything that I can utilise elsewhere.Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Good idea - I've got a set of lovely buttons from a charity shop Viyella jacket waiting to be used, BUT I put my button tin somewhere safe and can't find it :rotfl:I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.0 -
I bought loads of buttons really cheaply from our local dept stores haberdashery dept- I asked what they do with odd packets of buttons or ones where a button or two has gone walkies, and she produced a big basket. I ended up buying nearly all of them for about 2 pounds.
I am very new to sewing, and have been shocked at the cost of some supplies, especially fabric itself. I have bought some gorgeous fabric from Ikea for not too much though.:jMummy to 2 small 4 year old bundles of mischief!:j0 -

I agree, I find that my sewing for enjoyment rather than to be frugal, having said that this site is not badly priced, found some material for 60p a metre that I'm going to use to make a toy bag for the kids! Also ordered some tie dye cotton fabric for £2.49/metre which I'm going to use to make this. Of course there are postage fees to pay as well. I ordered the fabric yesterday so I'll let you know what its like, always a danger ordering over the net when you can't touch and see the fabric but 9/10 its ok, just if you were trying to colour match something!0 -
