If you let them down completely you could zig zag the raw edge & see what that looks like. I've done that with a pair of my own trousers & it looked fine. If it doesn't look good enoughyou could buy (or make) some binding tape the same colour as the trousers & sew that round the bottom.
Just reporting that I've done the trousers and they look great :D I didn't need to zig zag around the edge after all as the overlocking was still intact. I'm just about to iron them flat whilst I do the rest of the ironing. Thanks for the idea :T

I've spent today beginning to refashion a pair of curtains for my sister.

She bought these curtains & had them up in her kitchen for several weeks before realising that the applique pattern was teddies & bunnies & that they were curtains intended for a nursery!!! She was going to throw them away so I rescued them - am I the only person that can't bear to throw fabric away?

I bought a duvet cover from a charity shop for a couple of £s because it has the right blue to match her kitchen & am using patches of it to cover up the teddies & bunnies. I finished this today & it looks really nice.

I'm then going to use the fabric to line the curtains & to put a panel along the bottom to pull it together.

    Hope she likes them.

On the subject of sewing, could you give me some suggestions please?

On my travels I bought this lovely colourful tablecloth and it is huge. Now I have this idea to make some sort of curtain or drape for the kitchen window from half of the tablecloth, how can I do this? There is already one of those wooden poles at the top of the window. Should I make tabs and sew them on 2 strips of material, the curtain doesn't need to close, I have a blind, it will be for show only.

Or is there a way I could drape it along the pole in some way with minimum sewing? Not sure how to go about it, don't want to start cutting and ruining it.

You could make hidden tabs and then arrange the gathers so the curtain hangs nicely (attach strips to the back of each curtain along the line where you would sew cutain tape iyswim) but this would mean cutting.

    Otherwise, how about this: http://uktv.co.uk/home/stepbystep/aid/813
There are lots more useful sites. hth

Well, I finished my skirt shortening, took in two waist bands, sewed on a button and put a few stitches to hold some trimming that had worked loose.

Summer clothes ready to wear!! :j sorry if it starts raining :o

Tomorrow I am having a go at a patchwork-edged rug (saw one in Laura Ashley ;))

I haven't done any sewing for ages, but yesterday, when ironing a dress I bought in Tesco sale & have only worn once, found the seam wasn't stitched properly. So I got my sewing box out - it's stitched fine now!

    Morning all:j
What a lovely thread! I must confess, I don't do much sewing at all, even though I have the most beautiful 'craft cupboard' which houses my sewing machine, fabric stash, ribbons box etc. etc.

Back in the days when I was a SAHM, I studied Creative Textiles at our local Adult Ed Centre and really enjoyed it. We studied a different style every few weeks and covered beading, fabric painting, machine embroidery, patchwork etc. etc. As a result, my cupboard is full of the most exciting stuff - I just wish I had the time to make the most of it:o

Coincidently, and spookily, I did cut out a little fabric heart from some very pink and girly floral Laura Ashley-type fabric yesterday to make up and hang on the end of DD's bed. Discovering this thread will ensure that I finish it today and don't put it on the 'I'll finish it when I have time' pile (along with the half-finished cross-stitch, the half-finished patchwork quilt, the fabric stash to make the baby quilt (the baby in question is now 3 years old:rolleyes: etc. etc.)

    Keep sewing!!!

In the shop it looks like a plain coloured woven cotton 'rag rug' with a pretty patchwork edge. I found this picture online: http://www.lauraashley.com/Casual+Contemporary-Rugs/BONITA-PATCHWORK-RUG/invt/3393419

I bought a plain neutral coloured rug in IKEA and shall use a set of contrasting floral tea-towels as the edging. Just hope I don't snap too many machine needles as I don't want to do this by hand!

I'll let you know how I get on.
