  • I honestly can't thank you all enough for being so helpful, I'm so glad I posted the story on the forums. You're all giving me extra determination to get this sorted on the side of justice. Innocent people should not be put through this.

Argos have just called, the manager there is incredibly helpful. She's got them on CCTV making the transactions! I'm onto the other stores now and going back to the police. If someone stole £2k out of my pocket in the street then they'd be interested - what's the difference with card theft?!

Trust me HBOS are a bunch of clowns!

I feel like I'm undergoing a sort of 'consumer rights' education with all of this, which in a way is a great thing, making me so much more aware of how the wonderful world of banking and finance works. But I'm struck by the huge number of complaints on these forums that are about HBOS. They seem to be acting on some sort of 'panic measure' system, taking away overdrafts, not paying up on fraud, aggressively pursuing charges. It's as if the whole bank is acting like a very desperate and jangled individual, juggling bits of cash here, there and everywhere in the final days before having to give up the financial ghost.

Unfortunately it's impacting hugely on their customers.

But I'm struck by the huge number of complaints on these forums that are about HBOS.

But that's just what you get from an online forum ... people have a problem, so they go looking for help. HBOS have millions of customers, so there are always going to be many complaints on a forum like this.

But to give a very rough idea of how many there are, search for the name of the big five banks with the word 'complaint', and you get ...

    Halifax: 1260 results

    Natwest: 1090 results

    HSBC: 1170 results

    Barclays: 1110 results

    Lloyds: 1050 results

So there's very little between the numbers of results.

This site is always going to attract complaints, but it doesn't mean everyone is an unhappy customer.

Best of luck with your fraud claim.

They have more personal customers than any other company in the UK.

    That's before the Lloyds 'merger'.

Reading the troubleshooter story it seems like the same old story with the banks, any excuse to make the account holder liable.

A while ago i had my bag stolen, and immediately called to cancel my cards, the woman on the phone at cap 1 tried to trick me into saying that my pin was with the card which fortuantely I wasnt too shaken not to pick up on.

In the last year I've known several people in London in the immediate area where I work have their cards used fraudulently abroad after them having used one of only two cash machines in the area.

Chip and pin arent quite as infalible against fraud as the banks make out, but it does seem if they can find a reason to get out of refunding the account holder they will try - thankfully we have the ombudsman as an extra port of call.

I certainly wasn't an unhappy customer...until now, this has been a real eye-opener. Let's hope that by Friday I get some helpful news, trying to stay positive. Asda and other stores now going through CCTV too.

Well done for keeping fighting on this. Hope you manage to get the thief taken to court, and your money back from the bank. How awful that you have had to do all the investigating yourself. Top marks to the shops who have been helping you with the CCTV though.
  • They're all being helpful, bar one store, they all want me to get the police back onto this - I guess it's in their interests too.
