I am not doubting you.
I think if you check with Argos they would not release goods to that value without ID. That would be a good place to contact as a transaction where those goods were ordered and then not taken would be something they would remember.
I believe besides the legislation mentioned this would be a good way to prove your case/mitigate your losses
I'll definitely check this out..why would the money come off my account though? Thank you!0 -

They have terminals in Argos which allow you to pay for an item without using a cashier (using your card) - this also goes in your favour as it is more fuel to the fire. Thus the reason they would have done smaller transactions to see what was left on the card or if the floor limit had been reached.
The transaction would go through BUT the goods SHOULD NOT have been released without ID.
Most people making a purchase of that size would go to a till in case it got 'referred'
I really think Argos could be your saviour on this one - I would visit or make an appointment with the Manager.
The bank will do very little to help you.
Incidentally it has not been publicised but millions yes million of pounds were scammed from HBOS over the last 12 months or so as their fraud protection systems are useless.
If this became public knowledge they would be truly finished.
For example after 4-5 transactions in a short space of time most other banks have a system that puts a marker on the card and it is suspended until the owner account holder calls in.0 -

How do you know about the figures if they haven't been publicised? And why haven't they been publicised - obviously the bank won't but are people not looking into this?0 -

That would be telling!0 -

When I go shopping, I like to get it over and done with as quickly as possible - so i like being able to make a number of transactions in quick succession, and not have my card declined!0 -

True but I was merely stating how sensitive some of the banks fraud systems have become.
HSBC is particularly guilty of this - if it is a bad thing....0 -

Certain stores know they are targeted by thieves and they end up paying, so they have systems in place to minimise their loss. For example after 4-5 transactions in a short space of time most other banks have a system that puts a marker on the card and it is suspended until the owner account holder calls in.
All the banks I've been with if I suddenly go on a spending spree in the shops after the about 4th transaction in say an hour the shop assistant will have to phone through for authorisation. The shop assistant will then have to ask me for other ID, and then get an authorisation code on the phone.I'm not cynical I'm realistic
(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)0 -
With those terminals when you go and pick up your item if it's over a certain amount or certain items they will ask for your card and make you sign the receipt.

So basically you are agreeing with me?0
