Is anyone going to try it on a netbook?
I have it running happily on an Acer Aspire One (one of the Tesco recent £129 jobs)....and not so happily on a Dell Mini 9 (Dell £99 misprice).
Acer is fine, no issues (yet?) but the Dell warns constantly about low disk space and the page swap file warning comes up all the time. Obviously just too big a system for the space available.Herman - MP for all!0 -
I've got it on a Dell Mini 9 and it's fine, but I have upgraded the SSD so space isn't an issue. You can install it on the base 8GB with room to spare, although freeing up more space by disabling hibernation is recommended.
Since W7 is going to replace XP Home on netbooks, it's no real surprise that it works fine, if not better.0 -
What's it like on the netbooks (are the ones mentioned above Atom processors), is it usable? Interesting, turning into a good thread!0

Both the Acer and the Dell mentioned above are Atom 1.6Ghz processors. As said, the Acer is perfectly usable, no issues at all so far anyway. I like Windows 7 and providing I dont start having problems, I would be happy to shell out for this os, come the time the RC ends.
I am having problems with the Dell though...I'm not sure how anewhope says you can install it on the base 8GB with room to spare? Unless it's a nlite version maybe?I deleted both existing partitions on the Dell and formatted before installing Windows 7 from an external disk drive. Nothing else has been put on the netbook. Maybe there's something else I should have done, will have to go read up.

Currently installing the RC on an Atom 330-based Mini ITX system (dual core 1.6GHz CPU) will report back when I've had an opportunity to put it through its paces.0

It's very usable as long as you operate within the constraints of the hardware you've got at your fingertips. I've upgraded mine to have 2GB RAM and the fastest SSD you can get for it, but I'm still mindful about having too much open at once, as the Atom processor really can't cope with a barrage of tasks being thrown at it. One major thing I have noticed that is improved is the boot time from the logon screen to a usable desktop. XP was horrific waiting until you could get your browser open from a cold boot, but that's very much improved under 7. I'm not usually one to be overly bothered about boot times, but the role of a netbook is very different to that of a desktop.I am having problems with the Dell though...I'm not sure how anewhope says you can install it on the base 8GB with room to spare? You can, but it's a very tight squeeze on 8GB. Is it not completing the install? I don't n/vlite, just leads to problems later on down the line.0 -

Boots to login screen in 42 seconds and a further 23 seconds from login to a usable desktop - CPU 2% and RAM usage 30% on idle. The dire Windows Sidebar (which has been the cause of numerous crashes on systems that I have had to examine) is no more, being replaced by desktop applets (Gadgets) which are available if required.0 -
Been using 7 for a couple of motnhs now. Was one of the lucky ones to get the first downloads and serial key. Much better than Vista even in the BETA form. This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.0
