  • Well yes I don't know much about testing beta versions.
But I have a second PC which needs an OS and I wouldn't be put out if it crashed or corrupted data on me (as it is just for playing with, taping TV, playing music etc).

Why doesn't that make me a viable tester of an OS???

Is it because I'm not up my own bum enough?

No silly. It's because you're a girl and you shouldn't be beta testing.

You should be in the kitchen. Or bedroom.

From the official Microsoft FAQ: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/faq.aspx

The question you asked showed that you don't meet what Microsft suggests. And indeed if you read the FAQ your question is answered :)

Yet you ask the question "Can you get W7 for a newly formatted PC?"

    Something doesn't add up.

Surely I just asked a simple question about the nature of the installation (whether a clean one or an upgrade). Vista comes in both forms.

An earlier quick glance at the W7 site looked as though you already needed vista installed yet I would have thought that a new OS would be installed clean.

But I'll be off now coz I know where I'm not wanted.

    @ gillette

your 2nd machine is a perfect candidate for the beta program imo...you'll probably do things that those who feel they have a clue won't try (do NOT take that as an insult!). The beta needs testing by techies who'll try to break it via the command prompt and kids who'll just hit buttons as fast as they can, and everyone inbetween

edit - and the beta, I think, will upgrade from vista...but, like all OSs a clean install is the best start

As someone who has written many test scripts I do know how to try to systematically break software. But I am just looking for a free OS ;)

I don't think anyone was trying to be rude, your questions just suggested you were looking for a shrunk wrap commercial version to install on a new PC, but then you clarified.

I'm going to install the RC on a blank new Virtual PC image, with no OS, so will see how that goes.

Obviously if you have a spare PC and access to the RC, then you can install, test etc until Summer 2010, but as for a free OS, it isn't that. If you do end up using it on a test machine, even if you decide to buy it when it's released, you can't install over or upgrade the beta nor RC versions of Windows 7, you must wipe and reinstall from scratch. Hence it's not a free OS, but a testing/beta version for developers and tech professionals.

You'd be better off experimenting with a free Linux distro as you obviously capable, free forever, no timeout!

Yeah, all of the information from MS over the RC has made it quite clear that it should not be installed as an upgrade over any other version of either Vista or 7.

No one was being rude, just the way the question was phrased perhaps didn't reflect as much of the experience you have.
