I got the idea from this blog today, she does some fab furniture makeovers, I love the chest of drawers she posted today.

  • Don't worry it doesn't look any different but it does work. I used it on something that was dirty and had a few flecks of old paint splashes and it took it all off. I think if what you have is in pretty good condition you just can't see it has worked. I have used it on things in good condition and the paint still takes. Paint away :)

    fab fab fab.. will persue!!

Have taken ages to catch up as haven't been on MSE since last week.

Fantastic furniture finds, and marvellous make-overs...oooh hark at the alliteration!!

At last got the camera sorted and so can post piccies of my finds and make overs.

Here is a unit I was given by my lovely neighbour before she went into a home:

I have always loved it, but love it even more now:

And now to the amazing find I got today!!

    DSCF0295.JPG

I only saw it in the SH shop this morning, and they delivered this afternoon...no chance to change my mind then! I can't wait to make my first batch of bread on it!!!

I managed to clean the marble top quite a bit as there were a lot of brown marks as well as quite a bit of grime. It has still quite a few marks left, so I might some "proper" stuff to give it a thorough clean, since the main reason for getting it is to make bread.

I never dreamed I would find anything marble-topped that was affordable. This unit cost me £75, much cheaper then anything else I have seen. It is a bit low, so either DH can "add legs" or (and easier!) raise the top by adding some thick wood (another worktop would be good methinks) underneath the marble....and yes, I did consult him before buying it!!
It will live in the middle of the kitchen as an island unit, providing much needed storage and worktop space.

Tomorrow I will get my boys to remove the top (and store carefully!!) before taking the base down to the shed to get cleaned, sanded, cleaned again and then painted. It is white atm, but I will paint it Barley White (Dulux) to match the other unit shown above, as well as all the other cream Ikea units. I will prime the back before painting as it is still bare wood. I think I will get a steel rail to go along the back to hang towels on. Still not sure what DH is planning on doing, but if I get started with the prep, then there will be less to do, once he has made up his mind. Mind you, I have to decide what height I want first!!

It is really amazing how my ramshackle, cluttered kitchen is suddenly beginning to look organized, and dare I say...a bit smart!!!

Will post piccies once I have finished the painting and cleaning.

Sorry for such a long post...but I had to tell someone about my marble-topped unit!!

I LOVE your unit, would look great in my kitchen ;) hahaha

Hiya sorry to quote the whole message dont know what I did wrong there :o

But was just wondering if I could ask a question - on the bottom doors of your cabinet you have changed from long straight handles to single door knobs and the holes from the long straight handles arent obvious - how did you do this?

I really want to update my kitchen cupboards by swapping long handles for single knobs (really hope this makes sense) do you have any tips for not ending up with a random hole in the door as its not being used by one end of a door handle?

fab makeover on a cabinet :T- and as a breadmaker myself - can see how wonderful that unit is for you

    thanks in advance

Thanks for your kind comments...and everyone else too.

I filled the holes with all-purpose filler, sanded them down once dried (at least 24 hours), then painted over. You can get it as a powder to mix up, or ready made in a tub. I used this, but Wilkos also do a pack to mix up yourself. I usually find I make up too much, so the ready made tub comes in useful, and will stay useable for months, so long as the tub is sealed properly.

My DH drilled holes where I wanted the new door knobs to go, if it didn't coincide with the existing ones. I still haven't mastered the drill yet...but DH is so good with it, why spoil his fun!!

Been baking today...actually the three loaves of bread are just about ready to go into the oven as I type. I made another batch of Chocolate & Beetroot Brownies this morning, as well as 70 cinnamon buns with raisins. Will make more Hob-nobs (about 100) after the bread comes out....that should feed the monsters for a few days/weeks!!!!

Used the unit for kneading, but as I'm not sure how clean the marble is yet, I still used my silicon sheet (pain in the proverbial!), but should be the last time I use it!! The unit is really a bit too low - (oh my back!)...will go and hunt out some heavy duty castors to put on the bottom...need to be lockable so it doesn't take off when I'm kneading!!

Need to wash down the unit later and then get the boys to move it down to the shed where I can paint it over the weekend.

Enjoy the rest of the lovely day everyone.

  • Just a flying visit, I'm so excited I had to share! I was moaning to OH about the fact that the oven doesn't work and I didn't want to buy a replacement when we're planning to get a range for the new kitchen...he's told me he'll rip one of the cupboards out to make room for a range and we're going to look at them tonight...wheeee! :j:j I've found a bargain online, but we're going to go check the local sheds to make sure we're not missing any clearance bargains. And it sort of is shabby chic, as my shabby chic kitchen wouldn't be complete without a range cooker :D (I'd love a cream enamel one, but the budget ain't gonna stretch to that!)

Afternoon all, what a gorgeous day it is here. I am a bit miffed though because today is a NSD for me and I just realised that I dont have a brush to make a start on my nest of tables :( They are all sanded and ready to start painting so I will do them next week. I stole the idea from Kandipandi (I think) or Hart.

I the meantime I have done about 6 coats of spray paint on my ottoman and recovered the top. Its not quite finished but I am so chuffed with it so far I wanted to share. I am still needing to put a new tassle opener on and I thought that I would replace the tatty edging around the top and bottom of the ottoman with some shocking pink binding. Need to measure how much I need and go to the shop tomorrow for that.I am also wondering whether to paint the legs shocking pink? Would that be over the top do you think?

If the pictures dont work I am putting them on my homepage in a while. Wanted to add that it isnt perfect but it is my first attempt.

Personally I think it would look fabulous with the legs painted shocking pink, but then I love seeing things that are a bit different. You can always paint over them if you don't like it!

Thanks Bibbly. I am always up for suggestions and I was originally thinking I can always paint over if I dont like it. Still I can always make the decision as I am in no hurry.
Ladies, I just took delivery of this unit

Saw it last week and loved it. So I thought that I would open this up to suggestions. I originally thought it would look lovely sanded down and varnished a nice oak colour. Used for a bookcase.(It is a very good wood but not sure what kind of wood it is) Now I have it at home and I am sat here looking at it whilst I have my cup of Earl Grey I am thinking that it might be nice painted with a nice wallpaper in the back. See what you have all started.

So Ladies, over to you. Suggestions on a (forum) postcard please, no more than 15 words and perhaps we could take a vote. Then I might just do what I please but it will be fun listening to the suggestions.

Sorry I cant work out how to put the actual pictures on.
