Ahah - I just so happen to have bought a small tin (sample but probably big enough) of dulux Jewels (it is from the range that is made up so the tin is quite large). As I planned to use this to paint the bedroom wardrobes. I had toyed with the idea of a really bright colour but that would really frighten OH. Love the idea of turquoise, my favourite colour. Now do you mean to paper the panels on the outside? I have some lovely Farrow and Ball wallpaper sample that is like a piece of art. I have been debating buying a full roll as it is so beautiful
Yes, paper on the outside! Especially if you could get another sample/samples big enough of the F&B.
I was thinking along the lines of F&B's 'blue ground' but maybe a 'lulworth blue' might be calmer for your OH?
I love your dresser shelley, can't wait to see it finished. And I've been looking on that fb shop photos, how lovely is some of that stuff but the prices :eek:0 -
Shelley what a bargain we have exactly the same dresser but paid £65 for ours this is what we did with ours0

Wow craftyDeb it looks amazing:j I'm really excited to get mine finished now seeing yours looking so lovely! Thanks for posting the piccie it's given me the motivation I need today to get cracking on it again.
Did you have any problems painting it? Although I've sanded it down it's still really quite shiny, I've put 1 coat of primer on just need to put on another and then I can tackle the painting. Bit nervous about that tho!
I've also decided to change the handles and I've gone for brushed chrome hearts - not exactly shabby chic but quirky which is right up my street!Little Miss Chatterbox

That is stunning, its making me rethink my entire interior decoration, I need to stop coming on this thread. :rotfl:It's what is inside your head that matters in life - not what's outside your windowEvery worthwhile accomplishment, big or little, has its stages of drudgery and triumph; a beginning, a struggle and a victory. - Ghandi0

Thanks ladies I put a piccie of this on before but this thread is so huge. Shelley hubby painted this but he was very naughty he just rubbed it down and painted it so you are doing a much better job than us. Ours is in the living room though and doesn't really get knocked as such if it was in my kitchen we would have done it properly lol. I think your handles sound lovely the good thing about shabby chic etc is just do whatever you want my living room is a complete mismatch of painted furniture and I love it x0

Well tbh I've always liked the shabby chic look but this is the first item I will have in the house like that apart from a few metal hearts hanging from the curtain hooks! It's the type of look that will fit in anywhere I thinkLittle Miss Chatterbox

I think it suits all types of decor you can keep it pared down or go totally cluttered. We decorated our living room a year ago and painted all our dark wood furniture. Bought a very modern brown leather suite and it was very tidy and neat but over the past year I have added ornaments etc as I love clutter and I have started introducing red items as I had gone for a neutral look and then decided I needed a pop of colour lol xx0

Hi all
I am hoping you can help me as I've been gathering inspiration from your beautiful projects. I have been wanting to paint my old IKEA drawers for many years now and today is the day...
I did something similar about 10 years ago with some old drawers and they looked great for a few years then the paint started to come off in places. To avoid that happening is there anything I should apply after the paint? - such as varnish?
I've used ESP to prepare the surface. I was then going to just paint Crown Eggshell on top (as I did last time) but I notice that some of you use a primer. Is there any reason for this?
I don't necessarily want to age the drawers just plain finish with some new pretty handles will do for now...
Thanks in advance

Eggshell is oil-based and much tougher than water-based paint. You should paint two, if not three coats, and allow to dry thoroughly, then sand lightly before painting on the next coat. This allows the smooth paint to stick to the coat below, making it stronger and tougher, as well as minimising any obvious brushstrokes. Don't sand your final coat though!
You shouldn't need varnish on top, just allow the paint to thoroughly dry ... it can easily be bashed/scratched up to a week after the paint has dried....so allow it to "cure" before crashing into it!
I have painted numerous Ikea bits of furniture with melamine/foil surfaces, and they have all been successful, with little or no scratches (mostly in my sons' bedrooms too!!). The majority of my kitchen is from Ikea, but as it is only just over a year old...I won't be painting it just yet!!
Have a great weekend everyone. I hope to get some sanding done on my marble-topped unit this weekend (on the wood, not the marble!), as well as some priming and hopefully the first coat of paint!! Feeling a bit iffy just now though, so will have a bit of a lie-down before tackling it.
