Thanks Bibbly. I am always up for suggestions and I was originally thinking I can always paint over if I dont like it. Still I can always make the decision as I am in no hurry.
Ladies, I just took delivery of this unit

Saw it last week and loved it. So I thought that I would open this up to suggestions. I originally thought it would look lovely sanded down and varnished a nice oak colour. Used for a bookcase.(It is a very good wood but not sure what kind of wood it is) Now I have it at home and I am sat here looking at it whilst I have my cup of Earl Grey I am thinking that it might be nice painted with a nice wallpaper in the back. See what you have all started.

So Ladies, over to you. Suggestions on a (forum) postcard please, no more than 15 words and perhaps we could take a vote. Then I might just do what I please but it will be fun listening to the suggestions.

Sorry I cant work out how to put the actual pictures on.

That's lovely :T I think I'd paint it, and perhaps put wallpaper in the panels on the doors? I'd paint it either a french grey or maybe a turquoise or duck egg eggshell, something bright!
  • Ooh it is lovely. Now, whilst I am partial to a bit of oak, I would paint it, but I would leave the glass. Controversial! :p

Here is a pic of the dresser I picked up 2 days ago, it's been sanded and I've just finished 1st coat of primer however the top bit which I plan to keep dark by varnishing it still quite shiny after sanding !?! so I am hoping all will be ok but I have a little nagging doubt!

Ahah - I just so happen to have bought a small tin (sample but probably big enough) of dulux Jewels (it is from the range that is made up so the tin is quite large). As I planned to use this to paint the bedroom wardrobes. I had toyed with the idea of a really bright colour but that would really frighten OH. Love the idea of turquoise, my favourite colour. Now do you mean to paper the panels on the outside? I have some lovely Farrow and Ball wallpaper sample that is like a piece of art. I have been debating buying a full roll as it is so beautiful

Yes, I am leaning to the painting too and I will definitely be leaving the glass as it is. That is why it caught my eye.

That will look fab when it is finished. Not sure where you got it from but I follow a shop on facebook that has something similar to that but at a very high price Not sure if this link will work but it is a nice shop to have a browse in. I was thinking that I might have a trip down there whilst I am off work.

Wow thanks Cherisong thanks for the link I'm going to have a good old nosey at that now! Had quick peek and the prices are high but it's really nice to see a similar dresser painted. Hope mine looks as good ! I bought the dresser from a local charity called "too good to waste" based in the Rhondda. They receive furniture donations and then sell them on to raise money or donate to needy families. I only paid £30 for it so i was very pleased :)

Wow that is a bargain. I should find out where that is for the next time I have to come down to Cardiff for work. I could pop in. I never find anything quite so cheap. I am in Aberystwyth and everything here is so expensive.

Not sure if any of you have come across this thread but I have been working my way through it and thought that some of you may be interested https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/51807

It's based in Ynyshir in the Rhondda about 16 miles from Cardiff in the middle of the valley. There was a lot of tat there but I found 3 wooden dressers that I liked the rest were teak !!!! I will let you know if I find anywhere closer to you x

Thanks for your kind comments...and everyone else too.

I filled the holes with all-purpose filler, sanded them down once dried (at least 24 hours), then painted over. You can get it as a powder to mix up, or ready made in a tub. I used this, but Wilkos also do a pack to mix up yourself. I usually find I make up too much, so the ready made tub comes in useful, and will stay useable for months, so long as the tub is sealed properly.

My DH drilled holes where I wanted the new door knobs to go, if it didn't coincide with the existing ones. I still haven't mastered the drill yet...but DH is so good with it, why spoil his fun!!

Been baking today...actually the three loaves of bread are just about ready to go into the oven as I type. I made another batch of Chocolate & Beetroot Brownies this morning, as well as 70 cinnamon buns with raisins. Will make more Hob-nobs (about 100) after the bread comes out....that should feed the monsters for a few days/weeks!!!!

Used the unit for kneading, but as I'm not sure how clean the marble is yet, I still used my silicon sheet (pain in the proverbial!), but should be the last time I use it!! The unit is really a bit too low - (oh my back!)...will go and hunt out some heavy duty castors to put on the bottom...need to be lockable so it doesn't take off when I'm kneading!!

Need to wash down the unit later and then get the boys to move it down to the shed where I can paint it over the weekend.

Enjoy the rest of the lovely day everyone.

Thanks very much - youve got a great finish on it - you've inspired me to give it a go
