Thanks Pooky, the varnish on the table was a nightmare to remove with sandpaper didn'ty think of using a wire brush, I did take it back to the bare wood though which I don't know if I needed to or not?
I also want to paint over melamine and metal which ESP would do everything I think so I will probably get some.
If you get some here it is cheaper.

Vicki has persuaded me to paint my kitchen. TBH I think it's beyond redemption but Vicki's not so sure. They have to be the worst cupboards ever and the kitchen will get replaced next year so it will only be a temporary measure anyway. Won't be starting anytime soon as I hurt my back this morning.

I did manage to go to the CBS and unlike Vicki thought there were quite a few good bits. Just goes to show depends what catches your eye. I bought a magazine rack and an old foot stool which needs painting & recovering which might include new foam. Tempted by some other bits which I don't really have time to do or space to house so as I had the OH with me I didn't buy.

It's lovely PrincessVikki. Do you find it a difficult size to accommodate too? Maybe I'm just used to enormous handbags or teeny weeny handbags! :)

Thanks Shirlgirl. I will pop down there tomorrow and see.
Glad you got some good bits at the boot sale. I saw lots of magazine racks and was very tempted but I would have been in big trouble as we have nowhere to put one.
Glad you are going to have a go at the cabinets - Make sure you take lots of before photos!
Sorry to hear about your back - are you OK?

Yes. I think I spent too much time sewing last night. I was trying to make E a waistcoat, the only pattern I found was for a 2 year old so I just had to guess how to make it bigger. Suffice to say it wasn't very good guesswork and all I have to show for my efforts is a bad back. My back felt bit sore but OK last night but I got up this am leant in the cupboard to get out shoes and felt a twinge in my back. It got worse as I went around the car boot. OH has carried the dressing table from the spare room downstairs but even if I painted it I'm not sure about having it in our family room. Means I get to sit here taking it easy so it isn't all bad.

Yes I bought the 1st magazzine rack I saw and then saw nicer ones later but it cost £2 so I won't complain.

Will takes pics of the kitchen before and after but unless I can get a new (cheap) oven to fit where the yucky thing is it will have to stay as is. I can't imagine you can paint an oven.

Afternoon all, love all the things you are making/ changing, i have a question, is there any type of wood that you wouldn't try and strip back to repaint?. The reason i ask is that i have seen a small shelf unit which is ideal for my thimble collection, it is mahogany in colour but my o/h isn't sure if we can strip it back.
    Any help appreciated
    thanks all xxx

    Hi Deborah

You can't strip laminate but if you aren't sure then you could use ESP (as dicussed earlier today in this thread) and then you won't need to strip. If it is veneer then you will be OK but if you aren't sure then it's best not to strip. ESP will be very expensive just for a small cupboard though unless you plan on doing some other bits.

Deborah, what about covering it in paper/tissue - I covered a little box that I keep my buttons in with some paper napkins and a bit of PVA glue, someone - maybe Princess Vikki? Covered a lovely bathroom unit in the same napkins too so it works on bigger things.

Otherwise I'd use a primer and paint rather than trying to sand it down, or a kitchen cupboard paint would probably work but all of those would be pricey just for a one off project - might be worth posting a "Wanted" on Freecycle for a little left over bit?

I've just washed over the wardrobe - which is fab, the corner unit and the dressing table stool, it's all sitting in the back garden drying - my neighbours must think I've gone mad, DH thinks it's a mid life crisis (come early I must add).

Popped to B&Q and found some International MSP on the clearance for £5 for a litre and bought it anyway. Did a little search on line and people claim great results using emulsion despite what the tin says. I'm going to test a litte bit and see. If not I'll just use it for the things that I'm glossing.

Also bumped into my ex for the second time since we split, since the first time was while swimming I was much happier that I had some make up on this time and was looking half decent lol!

Thanks both for your replies, might try the primer and paint,
my o/h thinks I have gone mad too, everything I look at its like " just think what i could do with that" we have a coffee table brought from e bay crying out to be redone but with the weather it has had to wait, its far too big a job for inside,

I've been clearing out my sewing box(es!!) today and have found copious amounts of net curtain wire (I used to use it as rods in narrow roman blinds). I have kept a couple of packets in case of emergencies(!) but I still have four packs left. Two are 2500mm (96"), two are 2743mm (108") all come complete with one pair of hooks and one pair of eyes. If anyone would like some, pm me :)
