Hi everyone! i posted this question on the home and diy moneysaving bit but no replies, so just thought i'd have a go on this thread! I've just moved into my first house :T, and have wallpapered the living room but now the colour of the fire surround doensn't really go. Its a wood one, but its too dark and think it would look nice if it was a cream/light colour instead, so was wondering if i could paint it, and if i did, would i need to use a special paint or just normal satinwood or something similar (just thinking of the heat rising if the fire is on, and it discolouring) any help would be fab!! thanks in advance x

oh i love you roses vicki.

do u rememeber me saying about our old home built in 1733 ish. well the celings had those plaster roses. they were huge and so high up, we also had the plaster cornice things on the walls . well i think it was plaster. not sure what was used back then. It did look so spectacular. adds just a little finishing touch. my tiny lil house now tho would look silly with them, which is a shame.

That is what I was worried about, we only have an average sized house, certainly not a period property either, but I thought I'm having chandeliers I might as well go the whole hog!

As it's all open plan downstairs and we got the ceiling plastered flat it does look like quite a huge flat area so the roses shoudl hopefully add a bit of interest.

We have a wooden surround painted with satinwood. We had ours made as a copy of the original that previous owners took out:mad: It's painted everytime the woodwork in the rest of the room gets painted. We have a gas coal effect fire. Wood is not right next to fire (tiled surround and hearth) but no problems at all. You probably need undercoat or something (:o painting experts will be along soon) if you're putting light over dark but otherwise I'd say go for it.

    .

i was thinking in my dining room which is off top of head 13ft by 12ft .( maybe slightly bigger) at the mo we have one centre pendant light which has a pretty but small chanderlier style light over the dining table. but i was thinking of asking hubby to remove it from the centre and put two celing pendants in. so had two lights over the dining table area.

hard to describe but i mean somethign like this. Of course my room is smaller, lol. and i want smaller lights.

fortunalty hubby is a sparks so doesn't mind doing little jobs lke this for me. but i am wondering if maybe it is too much for my tiny lil house.

Love the 50's kitchen and the cakes look scrummy, are they real?

I like the idea of the two lights Jcr. I Was tempted to go for a longer lower light fitting over the dining table, but I wasn't sure that we wouldn't change where the table is so decided not to in the end. I'm wondering whether to get DH to move the light in our bedroom as when we moved in it was in the centre of the room, but then he built the ensuite and now it isn't IYKWIM. I think he won't be keen as it means going up into the loft!

The lights are all up and working, nothing got broken and nobody is injured, I've got him putting the new curtains up while he's on a roll!
