Hi Duckegg - yes pretty sure you need to seal the knots - I think you can just prime the whole thing and that will seal in everything - but I'm sure the experts on here will confirm - make sure you post some pics when you've finished xxxx

I am a newbie on the shabby chic thread, just bought a new (old ) house that needs lots of modernisation and updating.I have posted a question on the diy board but so far yesterday no reply, can anyone answer that question for me.

I want to paint old pine wall panelling, cos it looks very dated. Do i need to seal the knotts with that silver paint stuff,or will it be ok to paint it straight awayi,as it is at least 30 years old.I have seen a particular colour of farrow and ball paint on the wall of a local interior design shop, painted over rough wall panelling and it looks fab!Very beach hut,and i cant wait to get started.

I often go to auctions and that can be a cheap source of old furniture.I buy stuff for a fiver that no one wants, very nice stuff too.
If it is 30 years old they will have bled themselves dry so there'll be no need to treat them. Sounds like it'll be lovely when it's done. Please come back and show us pictures.

thanks all.I thought that the problem with the knotts leaching the paint might only occur with wood that wasnt fully seasoned, and therefore old pine wouldnt have this problem, can anyone else confirm?DO i have to sand it? Do i need primer also,do i need to sand it?What finish of farrow and ball do i need?

I'm just finishing painting an old oak sideboard with f&b estate eggshell - but I sanded it - not completely but to give it a good key, then I primed it with an oil based primer - which was awful to paint with and then finished it off with the f&b - however I have had to do loads of coats of f&b, is this because I used an oil based primer and then painted over with the water based eggshell??? Finally its looking almost finished but its been a right pain to be honest - and I have a few other things to paint - should I just leave out the primer next time??

A sanding will get rid of some of the build up of grease & dirt, & give a good base for the paint to adhere to, I would def prime first, as it's not something that you'll want to redo very often.
The wood is going to be so well seasoned that the knots will have dried out so no need for treating them.
    We NEED pictures on here.
It sounds as though it will be gorgeous.
If you either buy from or pretend you're going to buy from a specialist shop you will get good advice from them, as they've usually been trained better than the diy sheds.

I think that if you ise an oil primer you need to use an oil top coat, but can do it the other way around, water primer & oil based top coat.

Hermum's right - putting water based on top of oil won't work very well, but it would work the other way around. I'd recommend buying a water based primer and undercoat in one (B&Q colours range has a good one) to go underneath - you'll get a better finish and need to use less of the F&B.

Well we have had a successful car booty trip - OH is really getting into this house lark (and we've not even officially completed yet!). We bought a little sink for a cloakroom that doesn't exist yet :rotfl:, a boring garden security light, two gorgeous mirrored wall sconces and a little floral wire work hooks and shelf set to be sprayed cream. I'll try and get photos up soon, but going to new place to clean now

Wow Vikki, you lucky thing, that teaset is soooo yummy.
Had to do an express visit to the Boot Sale today as I had a friend coming round at 10:00. I'm not sure if it was me rushing, or just a bad week but I couldn't find anything I needed. I did get a few bits I didn't though!
A couple of pine framed pictures that will go with the new colour scheme and a blue and white plate for my dresser. Look like Hart was the Boot sale winner this week lol! As always, can't wait to see the after photos.

I've been itching to get home and get started on the dresser, and to be reunited with DH, of course! I've been hard at it (the dresser that is) most of the day and hope to have it finished in the next few days.

Have ordered some plaster ceiling roses from a seller on ebay

    !BokKgrwBWk~$(KGrHqQOKjYEtj+EChokBLn8b0Ii4!~~_35.JPG so !BoZBSYw!2k~$(KGrHqUH-CsEuZHwroHsBLnSe0FVfw~~_35.JPG

I hope they are as nice as they look, at the price I thought it was worth a try, and have been busy spending DH's Argos vouchers on these:61-4326625A73UC624802M.jpg

Hope everyone has had a good weekend.
    xx

PS, thanks for the lovely comments about my poor neglected blog, since I got the sewing machine and then started shabby-ing I have had no time to update it.
