vicki - I have just reread my post re your blog - hope it didnt sound cheeky
I so loved seeing the piccies of the renovation which is why I went to hopefully find more on your blog I hope you didnt mind me saying
Anyway it made me think about mine so guess what I have been doing for the last half hour - would love to see more about the house makeover - please share when you get a mo - bet your mother in law is delighted with what you have done so far0 -
Hiya, my first post on this thread and I was after some advice please
I've been given a pine wardrobe that I want to paint/change in some way. It doesn't have a finish/varnish I think it just has a light wax or oil of some sort. Any ideas on how to paint it? I didn't want to paint it a flat colour and wondered about watered down emulsion paint. Anybody done anything similar?
TIA
I would give the wood a very light sand with a very fine sandpaper, just to make sure that the wood isn't sealed.
Then I would apply oil paint thinned with white spirit - brush on and wipe off or apply with cotton wool - as the more liquid you apply the easier it is to permanently raise the grain, start warping the wood etc so I wouldn't use emulsion thinned with water.
You can use gloss or eggshell or artists oils, diluted until you have the tone that you want. Very little needed.
You can varnish or oil over the top when dry if you want, but using oil paint it isn't vital to protect it, just the wood.0 -
I painted a pine dresser base thats now in our lounge (it was a real 'orangey' colour!) I just put a couple of coats of sage green emulsion on -the second coat was 'dry brushed' -just a tiny bit of paint on it then drag it across to give a sort of grainy effect. When it was done I gave it a coat of dark oak wax........sort of 'wipe on-wipe off' job before it was buffed up, so it gave it a sort of aged colour.
Next project is furniture in the spare room.........blanket box, chest of drawers and bedside cupboard.........they're melamine but emulsion worked on the computer desk I've got so fingers crossed it'll work again.;)I would be unstoppable if only I could get started !

Score the surface of the melamine well, and sanddown so that you have a good key for the paints to adhere too! When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -
Thanks...........I did that on computer desk but its been such a while I'd forgotten the necessary bits like that,I would be unstoppable if only I could get started !

Here's me back from my travels. Lovely makeovers/houses etc too many too mention :T
Welcome euripidesralph we love to see ALL photosthe more the merrier, gives us all inspiration.
Elliem: Welcome to you tosorry I've not done lime look furniture so can't help. I would have just used watered down emulsion but Seakay has put me right!
In one shop that I went into (was semi-posh) they had a couple of painted and re-upholsered dining chairs and the price was £115 (I dont know if that was for both) there was also a wooden dining chair with wrap round arms for £115 in green. So there you are we are all on the right tracks and at a fraction of the price for the same look :T how brill is that:)0 -
