While I'm on the subject of my downstairs, I am looking at new ceiling lights and probably some decorative ceiling roses.
Now I'm not very good at knowing what looks right and in keeping with the kind of theme I'm going with, we don't have a period property so I don't need to consider that at all, but are there any guidelines or rules to make it easier for someone like me. I'd really like to add some elegance without making it look tacky.0 -
I love how the table has come out, it looks fab!“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0

Hermum, they had a 10m roll on yesterday too which I got very excited about. It went for £31, which is still pretty cheap but not the bargain I was hoping for!0

Yup, me again!
Since I now have a dresser, I found this on ebay...

I think it could be a bargain as the seller ran out of space so it's just listed as ...

theres only a day left and no bids, starting at £20 I though it was worth a mention in case anyone else is looking for one.0 -
wow vicki you table is gorgeous. ok without sounding very dim here. but when you say oiled it , does it mean it always has a greasey feel to it. or does it dry and not stain? as we have a gorgeous dining table but the area where my little boy ( 2yrs) sits has got quite worn. and hubby said about sanding it down and starting again. but i am worried using an oil will leave grease marks etc on paper when we write or stain table clothes ? can you reasure me it won't plz.
saying about your windows. mine and hubbys first home was a converted house built in 1733. and wow the walls were high. our lounge window was the full height of the wall and nearly the whole length of the lounge. the window measured 10ft ish high and about 14ft wide ( off memory) and it was an old sash window that was listed so was a bit drafty as we couldn't afford to repair it even with the grant. so curtains were a must. managed to find some crazily big ones in a sale for just over £100 at the time .
i went to LA to get a paint sample on monday. and i was there too early . they don't open till half 9. so i thought i'll pop back and did some other shopping then , completely forgot. looked online and they do samples but at £2.16 for the sample and £4.95 delivery i think i will leave it on this occasion.0 -
Thanks jcr, It does dry but it is a bit risky for a few hours. I had solid oak worktops in my last house which needed oiling to keep them nice and I found it didn't stain anything but I was careful just after doing it, and mainly did it last thing at night. From memory it was every couple of months that I did it. I prefer the oiled look to a woodstain or varnish and it won't crack or flake off so that's why I went for that option.
Wow your window sounds enourmous, imagine making a curtain to fit that! I have a dodgy window in the kitchen that we can't afford to replace so for now it's been bunged up with kitchen roll to keep the draughts out!
Homebase do LA paint, is that closer for you?0 -

I am going to get some fabric too, the trouble with doing the windows in it is that I have huge french doors which are 8ft by 7ft and the amount of fabric I'd need and the hugeness puts me right off!
I found some dusky blue curtains though at the boot sale that I am hoping will tie in.
I have a narrower but full length window to the front that I am considering making a blind for with T de J fabric though as I wouldn't need too many meters for that.
Could you use just a strip of T de J down the sides or along the bottom of the blue curtains? You could maybe tie it in with the blind by then edging the blind with some of the blue IYSWIM.
Your table looks lovely btw.0 -

It worked! I won the dresser it matches the sideboard exactly IYKWIM. So I am really pleased.
Here are the photos of the table I've been working on...
I've only done one chair, this one has since been oiled so the wood matches the table top.
Before
And now.
The colours have come out a little dark, the top is a mid oak colour.
I'm going to make some seat pads but need to find the wallpaper first and then match the fabric to that. I am looking for blue Toile de Jouy that isn't mega expensive.
LA used to do one which I loved but they've just stopped doing it.
I'm considering putting up a dado rail and papering the bottom half to keep costs down further but I'm struggling to visualise everything.
That is wonderful.... I love it... just what I am looking for, where did you get it from ????:)0
