littlesnuggy, they won't be deep enough to house a standard coathanger so you possibly won't get any to fit flush, or do you not mind them sticking out a bit?
I love little owl's suggestion but then that's because that's what I'm eventually going to do in my kitchen alcoves, I want chicken wire inside a frame, painted white & fabric behind. I've only got the bottom part of the built in dressers, the tops are shelved. Really deep shelves which is great for storage but looks untidy, especially as all my shopping comes from approved food so I have loads of stuff at once to store.
In my bedroom alcoves, I have ordinary panel doors, yucky modern ones though. I'm going to put up a curtain pole & nice fabric to hide the clutter, again, one day.
I think that you probably will find it much easier to make something to fit.
Bedroom looks lovely though. Is the rest of the house decorated as nicely?
We do like a good nose on this thread.
Who threatened us last night with a pic of a chaise? Hint hint.0 -
I had considered putting doors on the front with a rail and some shelves at the bottom and top but then thought once I do that, I can't take them with me (not that I'm thinking of leaving before I've even moved in but you know what I mean!)
Found these on Argos which would only stick out 4cm and I think look quite nice

Hermum: that's probably the nicest room, but there are fantastic wooden floors in both the kitchen and living room and a lovely fireplace in the living room (haven't got a decent picture) and the kitchen is pretty nice.
Main reason I'm buying is for the garden though (which is like goldust in central Bath)
Am I allowed to stay now I've provided pictures?!0 -

Yes, you are right - I had forgotten that the alcoves were not deep enough and remember that I built them out a little so that coat hangers would hang with plenty of space. If you are handy this is not difficult to do. In another house I had fabric curtained alcoves. Again they were not deep enough so I had a piece of wood for the top which jutted out to the desired depth, then fixed a curtain rail around it and hung two curtains in each - I used Swish rails which went around the bends and they drew smoothly and looked very good.0 -

Did you ever get problems with moths? Where I am at the moment I've got a canvas wardrobe which I just leave the front open on, but this winter I got attacked by moths who ate some of my jumpers  so I was thinking it would be better to have something with proper doors so I can shut the blighters out!!
I'm going to go and measure some coathangers now to see how wide they are - that never even occurred to me!0 -

I didn't have a problem with moths - maybe I was lucky - but I always hang lavender bags so that probably helped. I think you would probably have to have doors made but I do remember that I found louvred doors which were just the right size for the first ones I made so you might be lucky. I was in Home Base the other day and noticed some narrow glass fronted doors - you could pleat fabric behind the glass to match the decor.0 -

It looks lovely. You can stay as you're much better than me, as I've not put any pics on. I just buy stuff but never actually do anything with it.:rotfl:
I think that standard hangers are something like 23" before you hang anything on them. or 58.4cm ish0 -

Our first house had a similarly narrow alcove each side of the chimney, we put a shelf in at head height & hung a rail from it pointing outwards ie fixed to the back wall & the front of the shelf on a holder (instead of the usual side to side fixing).
Present house we were able to build a 'false wall' ie we boxed off one end of the room to make a large wardrobe that holds everything. Unfortunately, 20 years on DH still hasn't got around to finishing it off neatly.... :silenced:I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.0 -
Hi, I've followed some of you over from the sewing room and am very impressed by all your lovely things.
I'm not really into SC but I do like doing things up. This is a cupboard I did up for my children's toys. I've painted the doors to look like glass fronts with the toys inside which are all toys they had at the time so it's nice to keep for the memories.
The sun's reflecting on it but here is a close up
Oops, don't know the second one came out so big. The quality of the photo isn't very good as it was taken with an old camera.
The clock over the cupboard I made from a tin plate that I painted.0
